Video: The Wes Welker drop that probably cost the Patriots the Super Bowl

With a two-point lead, the Patriots had to punt the ball back to the Giants with 3:46 left to play in the game. They wouldn't have had to, had Wes Welker made this catch.

NBC commentator Cris Collinsworth said Welker makes that catch "100 times out of 100." I'd argue that 99 out of 100 would've been more accurate.

The Giants went ahead with a touchdown on the ensuing drive, and it would prove to be the last score of the game. 21-17 Giants was your final.

According to Greg Bedard of the Boston Globe, Welker's having a tough time dealing with it. "It's one I'll have to live with," he said as he fought back tears.

The Patriots did have a chance to come back after the drop and the Giants touchdown. They took possession on their own 20 yard-line with :57 to play, but again, drops buried them. Deion Branch dropped a ball on first down, Aaron Hernandez dropped one on second, and the Patriots were behind the eight-ball. They did get close to midfield for a Hail Mary attempt, but it was a pipe dream that wasn't meant to be.

[ Giants win Super Bowl behind another comeback by Eli Manning ]

Of all things, the Pats were done in by a drop by Wes Welker. He was targeted eight times on the day, and caught seven balls. That's the one he missed. He's made a career out of having terrific hands and coming up with big-time catches in traffic. Not that this catch would've been the easiest one in the world, but it's one you can usually depend on Welker to make. If you could pick any receiver in the world to make that catch, Welker wouldn't be far down your list.

He couldn't keep his hands on the ball, though. And now he doesn't get his hands on a trophy. Congratulations, New York Giants.

Welker dropped a huge pass. Hernandez dropped a huge pass. Patriots got a penalty for too many men on the field. Brady threw a bomb earlier in the game that was intercepted. Take your pick, mistakes all around. You can't point all blame on a single person.

        When was Hernandez's huge drop?

Quit playing the blame game. You play as a team, you lose as a team.

lol, sounds like the comment of a homer! the welker drop gave them the game!!
      • Horatio Caine 3 months ago
Sounds logical. But... The pass was perfect. You're right, you do play as a team. But when it comes down to it an individual can cost the game. Or win the game. Defense wins games by strategy, quarterbacks when it by faith. Brady put his faith literally in the wrong hands not once, but three times.

Refs 12 men on the field (both teams) 1 times for each. pass interference not called patriots defensive back, 10 yd penalty to Giants to give Brady a chance for hail mary pass from 50 yds into the end zone. thanks refs. You guys tried for the Patriots. I'll say that for sure.

The Pats did not lose that game because of one play. And anyone who tries to boil their loss down to a one-play sound-bite that blames an outstanding athlete like Welker is a doink.

couldn't have said it better myself. It's never "one play" but people just can't resist.
      • Dogface Gremlin 3 months ago
Yep...they just have to pick a scapegoat. Unfortunately, that goat should have been Tom Brady, not Wes Welker!
      • Emily 3 months ago
yes it was that one play but it was a tough one and he couldnt make the catch not like the one against the niners where the guy lets the ball bounce off his knee on the punt return

This was a huge play for the Gmen. Major turning point. Welker is a great player that almost never misses!!!!!!

To be fair to Wes Welker, it was not a great throw. He is paid a lot to catch passes, but Tom Brady is paid more to make good throws.

Maybe I am biased since I am a Colts fan, but does it seem like everytime Tom Brady loses a game people make all the excuses in the world for him? You win as a team, you lose as a team.

Welker is one of the greats but that was hardly a routine catch.

Welker dropped a pass that was BADLY thrown in my opinion!! You can't blame one player for this loss!! There were other errors by many other players. Win together. Lose together. Wes, you're still my favorite Patriot. Keep your head up.
    • ZenActor  •  3 months ago
Lets blame Welker for the Pats loss. Lets give Brady a pass for giving up 2 points on an intentional grounding penalty in his endzone. Lets give Brady a pass for his ill advised throw that led to an interception that killed what was looking like a really good drive. Lets give Brady a pass for throwing the ball behind Welker on that dropped pass. On the very next play, Lets give Brady a pass for a poorly thrown ball to Branch, that resulted in an another incomplete pass and a punt. Lets forget that Welker had some nice catches where Brady didn't make the greatest of throws. An entire 60 minute football game came down to one mistake by Welker where all the mistakes by Brady didn't matter.

Why does everyone blame the receiver? Am I the only one who thought it was a horribly thrown ball - thrown behind the receiver? This "missed catch" was on Tom Brady - not Wes Welker.

Funny how no site is mentioning the obvious missed pass interference that caused the Giants to punt. If they score on that drive, the game isn't this close.

honestly i absolutely hate the patriots and i always root against them unless they are playing the steelers, but this is in no what welkers fault . He played like a champ out there, and there were multiple dropped passes in needed situations by 2 other receivers (branch and hernandez). get off welkers back.
