Report: Browns want to trade up to draft Robert Griffin III

Getty ImagesThere will be two coveted quarterbacks in April's NFL draft: Andrew Luck of Stanford, and then, the perhaps slightly less-coveted Robert Griffin III of Baylor.

Luck will most likely be drafted first by the Colts, leaving the Rams picking second but without (arguably, I suppose) need of a quarterback. So a trade makes sense, and Steve Wyche of NFL.com believes it'll be the Browns jumping up to take RGIII. Here's what he wrote in his first mock draft:

Several teams are going to try and move up to get Griffin but the Browns have the most ammo -- the fourth overall pick and a late first-rounder or high picks in later rounds. Cleveland needs Griffin -- and wants him, according to league sources -- and the Rams will still get their man.

That man, in Wyche's projection, would be Justin Blackmon, wide receiver out of Oklahoma State. But let's stick with the quarterbacks.

The question of need between these two teams is an interesting one. Colt McCoy and Sam Bradford were both drafted in 2010, and McCoy's coming off a season that was, at least statistically, better than Bradford's. Look:

I'm not trying to shove Sam Bradford into the woodchipper, but I'm not sure that the Browns have a huge hole at quarterback that the Rams don't. These stats aren't the end-all, be-all, obviously, and Bradford had a lot to deal with this season: a new offensive coordinator, injuries, lack of depth at receiver, etc.

But it's not like McCoy's been injury-free and surrounded by the '87 49ers, either.

I don't know the right answer ‒ the question is interesting, though. The Rams want to go get help for Sam Bradford, while the Browns want to move on from Colt McCoy, but is there any reason for it aside from draft pedigree? Bradford was taken first overall, while McCoy was taken 85th.

Both teams have a lot of holes to fill all over the field, and, if they so choose, at the quarterback position, too. The direction they go in the upcoming draft will be pivotal for both franchises.

And the Browns QB carousel goes round and round.

Unfortunately, it's a depressing annual occurence. Like the week nine loss that statistically eliminates them from play-off contention, or the annual star-player injury that destroys the season, or the ever-present coach on the hot seat. Clockwork. (sigh)

The Browns led the league in dropped passes. The should just draft the best player available.

Browns need to give McCoy more weapons and keep him healthy

I agree with you. You could Dan Marino in that offense and he couldnt do much better
I like how people point at Colt. No weapons, line play stunk, WR's had bricks for hands.

the only way you stick with colt is if you get trent richardson with the 4th pick and get a decent wideout later in the 1st round. or vice versa with blackmon at 4 and a rb later in the first. it's really hard to pass up griffin's kind of talent when we FINALLY have the opportunity to get one. we need an offense badly.

Otter: I highly doubt Blackmon drops to 4, the Rams don't have a primary weapon @ receiver. The only way they trade out of the 2 spot is, if someone sales the farm, like Atlanta did to get Julio Jones last year. I don't get why the Browns would want to make a move like this, Colt is more than serviceable.

The Browns do not need a QB, they need some people who can catch the ball.

browns dont need a qb....how about some blocking for the one you got....2nd need someone to catch the fing ball....how about moving up and get blackmon instead...... see cincy moves.... dalton feel in their laps...(ty palmer)....... but aj green made em contenders....if u dont adress these needs on offense....youll just have rg3 doing the same thing as colt running for his life and throwing to recievers who cant catch

how you gonna move up and get Blackmon if the Rams are wanting him. Gonna be hard considering the Rams have the 2nd pick and would only trade that pick if they were assured of getting Blackmon.

get McCoy some more help at reciever and oline before you write him off, the kid was a proven winner at one of the biggest college programs in the country.

Browns could have had Julio Jones LAST season, ..... they just do not want to win.
      • Jimbo Sez... 4 months ago
Nah...that was a smart trade for the Browns. Better off with Greg Little and that extra #1.

Jason, I didn't see great things from Julio Jones and the Browns got a helluva DT last year an additional 1st round from Atlanta this year (I think a 3rd or 4th as well). They did fine. They're building a core but need to hit on all these picks

colt is ok,griffin would be nice, but we need help in orher spots.

Griff 3 will suck in the NFL. He shouldn't have gotten the Heisman over Luck, who will suck too. If you want at least 2 more years of shittiness, pray that they get Griff 3.

WE NEED A RECEIVER YOU IDIOTS! What the heck is wrong with the Browns. They are so stupid.

As a Browns fan I will be sick to my gut if they do this. They need players around the QB in order to win. Why dont they ever understand that. Colt was solid with a terrible offense. Get some wr help and a play maker 3rd down type guy in the back field the Offense will get much better. See Ravens and 49ers.

      DONT DO IT!

this is why the Browns continue to suck. Draft a sure fire RB, TE, WR, or O lineman to help McCoy. Drafting yet another QB isn't the answer without help.

This guy is on drugs! There is no way the Browns will give up an extra number 1 pick to move up 2 spots.
    • nogahide  •  Greenfield, Ohio  •  4 months ago
I dont believe they have to trade up, indy will take Luck, rams will take Blackmon, vikes will take an ot. If Griffin is gone Browns can take Blackmon, maybe he will help McCoy enough.
    • jeff  •  Massillon, Ohio  •  4 months ago
why trade up rg3 will still be there at 4? since the rams and vikings recently picked 1st rd qb's, either draft rg3 at 4 or trade down with the redskins who need a qb, we would prolly get an extra 2nd rounder from the skins and we could draft malcolm floyd or trent richardson with the redskins pick at 6
    • David5264  •  4 months ago
Browns just need to stay where they are. The only real threats to jump them are the Skins and Phins, and I don't see them giving up the majority of a draft for one player, which is what the Rams will require to drop that low.

Hey, I don't know if Colt McCoy is the answer but I sure as hell know he isn't the problem...No line, no receivers, no running backs, an uncommitted owner and a first year coach...should I go on? Yeah, let's draft another quarterback so we can ruin their career like we have before...

how about cleveland drafting a f#$%#ing general manager! 50 million for Holmgren and nothing to show for it.

Totally disagree on authors take. Sam Bradford needs a quality receiver to thrive. The defense that they will face in their own division for the next 5 years is loaded. The most basic thing is Sam Bradford has shown amazing accuracy and the ability to throw downfield, something which McCoy physically lacks. Sam Bradford was rookie of the year and after a down sophomore year he is poised to take off.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!! Dan Snyder you PRICK!!! You better get him before anyone else or expect a mutiny at FedEx Field!

Just when u thought the Cleveland Browns might start making good decisions they talk about getting rid of McCoy who has no weapons a hurt all season Peyton Hillis and he had to run for his life every play. This franchise will never escape their own self inflected mediocrity.

Smart team leaders will posture to get the best value at draft time. Holmgren and Heckert are no fools.
