NaLyssa Smith had 25 points and 15 rebounds and was one of five players scoring in double figures for No. 4 Baylor as the Lady Bears opened the season with an 82-37 win over Central Arkansas on Wednesday night. Caitlin Bickle also had a double-double her first career start for Baylor with 14 points and 11 rebounds. DiJonai Carrington, the former All-Pac-12 guard from Stanford and preseason Big 12 newcomer of the year, had 11 points in her Baylor debut, while 6-foot-5 freshman center Hannah Gusters had 13 points.
Haley Jones felt all the nerves as if it were her first game as a freshman again last fall. Jones scored on a layin 14 seconds into the game and wound up with 16 points and 10 rebounds playing for the first time in more than 10 months since a knee injury ended her freshman season early, leading No. 2 Stanford past Cal Poly 108-40 in the teams' season opener Wednesday. When she went out last year it was devastating for our team,'' Stanford coach Tara VanDerveer said.
The season-opening women's basketball game between Cal State Fullerton and No. 9 UCLA has been called off. Fullerton was awaiting results from its COVID-19 tests from last Friday. UCLA says there's no make-up date yet.
