Matthieu Pavon, trying to become only the second Frenchman to win a major title, made three birdies on the front nine at Pinehurst to grab a one-stroke lead in Saturday's third round of the US Open. But Aberg was short of the green with his approach at the fourth to stumble back just before Pavon took the lead with a birdie putt from just outside 21 feet at the seventh.
Scottie Scheffler didn't expect 5-over par through two days at the U.S. Open would be enough to play the weekend. “I'm having a lot of trouble reading these greens,” Scheffler admitted. Scheffler, who shot 71 on Thursday and 74 on Friday, finished with two birdies and three bogeys Saturday.
Shipley was rolling in Round 2 before a double bogey at the par-4 13th hole.
