Fourth-Place Medal, a Yahoo! Sports blog covering the Summer Olympics in Beijing

NBC went to a lot of trouble in order to get major Olympic events like swimming and gymnastics on the air live in primetime in the United States. Now, after getting their wish, the Peacock Network is inexplicably showing those events on tape delay on the west coast.

Because the time difference from Beijing to the United States wouldn't allow NBC to air live coverage of events from China, swimming and gymnastics finals were moved to the morning in Beijing. The network paid $894 million to broadcast these Olympics and didn't want a redo of 2000, when every major event in Sydney was shown on tape delay (it's no coincidence that the ratings for those Games were the lowest in history).

But after enduring months of tough negotiations with the IOC to get the events moved, NBC is doing exactly what they tried to avoid: showing events on tape. Tonight's swimming finals with Michael Phelps, Dara Torres and Katie Hoff were not shown live in the Mountain or Pacific time zones, nor will they be shown for the entirety of the competition. NBC will instead run the east coast feed three hours later; at 8:00 p.m. PT. So, at the moment (midnight on the east coast), viewers on the other side of the country still haven't seen Phelps shatter his own world record in the 400-meter individual medley.

This is a baffling decision by NBC. It's hard to recall any other occasion when a sporting event has been shown live in one half of the country, but not the other. It's unheard of. Sure, some sporting events start at weird times on the west coast, but that's the norm and people adapt. Like earthquakes, wildfires and actors-turned-governors, it's just how things are. That's why bars have breakfast buffets and bloody mary specials during football season for 10:00 a.m. kickoffs. If live mid-day weekend telecasts are good enough for the NFL and college football, why not the Olympics?

If the network plans on continuing the delay of the west coast feed, they're subjecting themselves to viewer backlash, poor ratings and upset advertisers. Essentially, NBC strong-armed the IOC into changing around a bulk of the Olympic schedule in order to broadcast live events in two time zones. Great business decision, guys. Why not just push Jay Leno out the door too while you're at it. (Oh, wait.)

Pushing Jay Leno out would be a great move except that Conan and his 3 Stooges humor are even worse.

It is now 9:30 p.m. where I live on the West coast and I have just read about Michael Phelps victory. Instead of watching the event happen live, I am watching a stupid women's volleyball match. I do not want to stay up all night to see these events. If NBC chooses to withhold theses special moments from those of us out here, I just won't watch the Olympics and NBC. I can catch it on the highlights on my local news s tation tomorrow morning!

NBC is really doing a horrible job on covering the Olympics. Every 10 minutes they cut to Coca Cola or Visa commercials. Thank God for Yahoo, I don't have to give NBC ratings. **** NBC!

it is indeed baffling. i myself live in wisco so have not had this issue. for the posters that complain about the tape delay, why not watch it at nbc's website? not as good as watching it on your bigscreen or whatever you have, but nbc is broadcasting it live on their website.
quit complaining here and go watch it there.
still a very stupid move on nbc's part.

In the 21st century, live coverage should be the norm. NBC should trust its customers to tune into their favorite programs regardless of time, and they can still recoup their "investment" if they treat treat their customers like adults!

I have had it with these NBC idiots. I am old enough to remember when watching the Olympics meant that you actually got to watch the athletes, not some gooey crap. Let me see the events and let me see them LIVE!!!!!!!!

We're trying to watch beach volleyball and have missed several points because NBC keeps interrupting its coverage to show commercials! And - they are political commercials, which we certainly don't need to see during the Olympics.

Seriously...NBC has a sports coverage team still? Besides that shamble of a broadcast team of over-the-hill Madden and Michaels, I didnt even know they still had sports on that channel.

Thank the Good Lord for my cable where I also get NBC from Detroit, so I got to see all the swimming events live. However, NBC's coverage even on the east coast pales in comparison to the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC, Canada's national broadcaster). They have been showing live coverage for the last 18 hrs, so I haven't missed anything of importance.

I too am on the WEST coast and have to sit and listen to bad commentators tell me we are watching the volley ball live, and the gymnastics live...when i have read that the US won the Volley Ball, and that Phelps won his first gold medal. I HATE THIS COVERAGE! Why can't they broadcast live on the West Coast? It would actually be early enough for most of us to WATCH. AS it is WE ARE ALL going to Yahoo....

I think the article hit the nail on the head. What is NBC thinking? I guess as long as the local Yankee-loving, the only-place-in-the-world-that-matters Manhattan-centric Rockefeller Center crowd gets their feed live then all is right. Now, let's broadcast another fluff piece on beach volleyballers.

Get satalite and watch BBC, CBC and Euro Sport. They cover the Olympics and not just a few Americans in the Olympics. NBC is not showing any of the "lower" class sports unless am American is going to medal. Very Sad. I bet Jim McKay is rolling in his grave. Now THERE was an Olympic Host!!!!

NBC WHAT THE HELL IS WRONG WITH YOUR DECISION MAKING? What happened to the months and months of the hype of talking about the olympics and now we can see it LIVE !!!!
We do not give a dam what they serve for breakfast lunch or dinner and we do not want to see several of your idiot reporters choke down squid, balls, scorpions or worms, penis or anything like that - especially when the chinese person with them is in the back ground about to throw-up while your reporter is eating it...
WE WANT TO SEE THE EVENTS WHEN THEY HAPPEN and we will watch and go to bed when we want to so we can see them LIVE NOT TAPE DELAY....And NBC while your at it, would you please replace that rude and crude Kathie Lee on your morning show or give her a roll of duct tape to apply to her mouth when she has guests on- There is not one guest that gets to say anything because either Kathie Lee or Hoda (kathie lee the 2nd in her rudeness) also speak over each other or so loud the guest can't explain why they are even there...Not only is that show embarrassing but so is the olympics the way you are handling it...

Chris Chase, you must have a short memory.
Much of the 2002 Winter Games in Salt Lake City were live on the east coast in prime time.
But here in San Jose and other west coast cities, they were shown on a three-hour delay.
Even in Salt Lake, they were on tape-delay. The network's thinking is if coverage starts airing at 5pm Pacific time on weekdays, people aren't home from work yet and therefore cannot watch.
But there must be some way to accommodate the people who can watch it live AND those folks stuck in trains and automobiles during the evening commute.
