Fourth-Place Medal, a Yahoo! Sports blog covering the Summer Olympics in Beijing

The International Olympic Committee has ordered an investigation into the age of Chinese gymnast He Kexin, The Times of London reports. Faced with almost insurmountable evidence which suggests that He is two years younger than the birth date listed on her Chinese passport, the IOC has launched an inquiry that could result in the stripping of He's gold medals.

This news comes on the heels of another Times report that details the findings of a New York computer security expert who found official Chinese documents that list He's age as 14 years and 220 days. Mike Walker used a Chinese search engine's cache feature to find He's actual date of birth on spreadsheets from a Chinese government website. The spreadsheets were taken down off the site recently and He's name had been removed.

Assuming the IOC is committed to a real investigation and not some dog and pony show, the revelation that the Chinese government covered up the ages of gymnasts could end up being the defining moment of these Games for the host country. Officials wanted the Olympics to be a coming out party for a new China. But while the Games have been a huge success, there is a legitimate possibility that China's legacy from Beijing '08 will be that of a massive government cover-up, not the magical Opening Ceremony or the transformation of Beijing or anything else positive.

All the good work China did to put on these Olympics could be forgotten because of an unnecessary, arrogant move by the government. Why risk everything to put a 14-year old in the competition when they could have replaced her with an of-age 16-year old gymnast? Sure, He is a better gymnast than the Chinese gymnasts who were eligible to compete, but with the judges they had at the Olympics, would it really have mattered?

It looks like the IOC are the last to realized they've been tricked. The Chinese should be suspended.

If the USA sucks then why would they even have to hide the fact that they (China) broke the rules. I bet if it wasn't in their country they probably wouldn't have cared as much or went out of their way to cheat.

Good. Hopefully they will get a result one way or another. We really need to know if Nastia lost to a 16 year old or a 13-year old. And only by this, we can shut Chris Chase up.

I predict that nothing would come of this investigation. Do you think the IOC is brave enough to strip the Chinese of their Gold medals? Absolutely not. Mark my words. Nothing is going to happen

What pathetic blabber this all is. Do you all think the China is the only country that bends the rules? Look at some of the other girl gymnasts and honestly say they look 16..............they don't. I wander how many US atheletes are on steroids, they are the masters at that.
If China had not worked so hard and won so many medals, who would you people pick on? Who cares if the fireworks were not real? Who cares if the little kid was lip-syncing? Just enjoy the sport and forget about your bigotry.

Take a look at some of the Chinese gymnasts any eye can tell you they aren't 16, He barely looks 12 if that.
Bribery to say the least, the US male gymnast was superior to the Gold winning Chinese one, but again we fall into second place, and again the female vault China falls on her landing, but guess what she wins GOLD......Hello is anyone home....the only place they aren't winning is on the track, but that will be next.
When the games started their ages were questionable, but their passports say they are 16, hello their passports are phony tooooo! These kids are products of their government and it's a shame.

She might get stripped of her medals. There is a certain point in every situation beyond which it becomes impossible to look the other way, much as people involved may want to. That point may have been crossed. Time will tell.

i am sorry but this girl looks about 12...so....ioc better do somethinggggg and if shes discovered to be underage...strip her medals. our girls did amazing, but think how unfair it would be if we knew we had a gold medalist 13 or 14 year old sitting around waiting to be old enough for the olympics and we doctored a bc to get her in. it's not fair.

Government cover up? Probably. But does it really matter. The reason there is a age rule is to protect young kids from the rigors of training and the damage it can cause to their joints and backs. But the Americans themselves said they have been training all their lives for this one moment. So whether they compete in the Olympics or not this rule is not going to protect girls like He, or 14 year old Americans that are shooting for London. They are still exposing themselves to the dangers that the rule is meant to protect them from. So why even have an age rule. It serves no purpose.

PS...the scoring suckssssssssssss so much because the rules changed, not to mention the judges are from gymnastic competing countries that do not have any top competitors in the field. So the judges are basically idiots who take basic rules and jip our gold medalists out of a medal. The scoring suckssssss this year.

Biased bribed judges? Maybe in some cases and in some events, but I doubt anyone is ever going to know for sure. In any case I don't see where it made much difference. Unless I was watching a different Olympics than everyone else, the US was outmatched in gymnastics almost without fail. There were a few shining moments but the Chinese pretty much ruled and deservedly so. If it turns out that they broke some rules concerning age, then they should certainly pay the price, which is going to be too bad for their athletes who did a tremendous job, regardless of their respective ages.

Chris Chase is a hater, a snitch, an insecure and jealous person. He has low self-esteem, he is hungry for attention. That should explain what he is doing. He probably spends the entire day coming up with silly stuff like this to get people to notice him. Yeah, like I said, lets find out if Nastia lost to a 13 or 16 year-old girl. Truth will reveal itself sooner or later, like Roger Clements, Marion Jones and the list goes on...

Regardless of the outcome for the sake of maintaining the integrity of the Olympic games it should be investigated. There is no doubt that He is an amazing gymnast regardless of how old she is and how she got to where she is now. Honestly I don't care if 14 year olds compete especially in a sport that is so age restrictive, but the key is that every country should be allowed to use younger competitors. I understand however that the reason for the age limit is health related, and in which case it should be enforced.
My biggest beef with this years Olympic games is the inconsistencies across the board, not just in gymnastics.
