Shutdown Corner - NFL

Awful Announcing has been all over a miniature war of words going on between ex-quarterbacks turned-commentators Boomer Esiason and Troy Aikman. Boomer, for reasons I can't imagine, got things started by going off on Troy Aikman on WEEI's Dennis and Callahan Show. Boomer feels like Aikman was a little too pro-Cowboy in his commentary on FOX.

"It was the first time that I heard a legitimate bias from one Troy Aikman towards the Dallas Cowboys. You would've thought that the Arizona Cardinals weren't even in the building. I was taken back by some of the things that Troy was saying, and I like Troy. I really do. He's a very bright broadcaster, but the bias that was coming from him yesterday was actually stunning."

What I find stunning is that Boomer Esiason appointed himself ombudsman of NFL broadcasters. Why he feels like it's his place to tell other analysts how to do their job, I couldn't tell you. More on that in a second. Here was Aikman's response, as e-mailed to Barry Horn of the Dallas Morning News:

"Well, I'm glad Boomer is watching the NFL on Fox. I take great pride in not showing a bias towards any team that I am broadcasting and I'm confident the teams that I have covered over the last eight seasons would agree that I've been balanced and fair with my coverage. Also, I never much got into critiquing other quarterbacks when I played and I don't get too wrapped up in critiquing broadcasters now."

The first thought I have here is that I've never found Aikman to be at all pro-Cowboy. It's not like he shows up in the booth wearing his old jersey, with a pair of leather boots and a Cowboy hat. If there's any bias there, he does a good job of hiding it. I think it's the kind of thing where if you're listening for it, you'll probably be able to find examples of it. If you're not, you probably won't.

But I think the bigger point is this: So what if Aikman did have a Cowboys bias? I expect analysts to talk about what they know, and spending his entire career as a Cowboy, yeah, Aikman might have a little bit of attachment to the organization. He's human. It happens.

Everyone's got biases. Am I to believe that Boomer Esiason played 14 years in the NFL and never liked or disliked anyone? And that every day he walks into the CBS studio or the Westwood One booth, he just checks those feelings at the door? What is he, a cyborg?

That's the thing about biases. They're there, whether you want them to be or not. And that's okay. You do your best to call things down the middle and you try to be perfectly fair, but there's always a human element involved. Let's embrace it, not stifle it.

Does anyone else feel like Boomer does, that Aikman is too pro-Cowboy? Are there any other announcers who lean to much in a certain direction?

Aikman is fine. I didn't sense any bias from him, although like you say, he was a cowboy his entire life I would expect some bias. But please for the love of God, they need to get Tony Kornheiser off the air already. I liked him on PTI but hes just becoming brutal already. He brings up things during the game that I have already heard about a million times during the week from the media.First it was the Farve thing. His comparison of Eli getting the ball to Plaxico was like T.O. getting the ball was totally stupid. Yet he kept bringing it up. I don't know about anyone else but from this point forward, I will be watching monday night football on mute.

As if Boomer has never made pro-Bengal comments....... or wouldn't if the Bengals were actually fielding teams worth being broadcast. All of the ex-players/now broadcasters have bias and insights into their previous teams. That actually is great for fans to hear from someone with actual real connections and insights into their favorite teams.

Are you kidding me? I can't think of an announcer who doesn't like to slurp the Packers, for one. Especially when they had that QB Whose Name Shall Not Be Mentioned. I'm looking at you, John Madden and Tony K.

Boomer was right on with his comments, it was a dreadful piece of bias broadcasting I am sure it would have been fine for local Dallas radio, but it was a joke. Aikman did not give any credit to the Cardinals and chuckled when penalty flags were thrown against Arizona. Thankfully his precious 'boys were beat down in more ways than one.
If you want former players insight stick them in the on a show like inside the NFL or Gameday, in the locker room or on the sideline, not as an "analyst" in the booth. If you must have them in the booth, don't let them do their own former team's games.

It's funny Cowboys fans always say he is anti-cowboys to prove he is not biased.
I think he's fine. When he says something good about the Cowboys people will cry bias, and when he says something bad, Cowboys fan will cry out...

And speaking of Boomers - Berman's bias towards the Bills and 49ers reached a saturation point 15 years ago.

i agree with boomer on this one! i told a cowboy fan that on monday that some of the mistakes that the cards made he talked about them, but when the cowboys made the same mistakes he said little or nothing about theirs. he maybe still upset because it was the cards who ended his playing career in dallas in 1998

If there's anyone guilty of this It's Ron Jaworski. You can't get through an Eagles game without him pointing out exactly how well the Eagles are playing while showing video clips of average plays. "Look at that run" (2 yard gain), "McNabb is on fire tonight" (3 yard dump pass)...
I've always appreciated Aikman's insight and felt like he does a heck of a job keeping his commentary balanced.

Lets be honest here, I watch every Cowboys game and the games I've watched that Aikman was calling, he is almost completely non bias. In fact, he is almost to the point of anti-Cowboys. Its very obvious...

OK, I've been a die-hard Cowboy fan since 1967 (ironically it was their play in the "Ice Bowl" that did it!). That said, in my opinion, Aikman has consistenly been free of bias, and in fact has gone out of the way not to appear pro-Dallas. Instead he has admirably demonstrated his knowledge of the NFC, especially the East teams. On the other hand he's teamed up with Joe Buck, who searches for anything anti-Cowboy to say. He adulates over the other team, downplays the Cowboys' good plays, and obsesses over the miscues they make and the turmoil that frequently has bubbled up (and that has been over blown at times by the media).

I am a life long Cowboys fan, and I sometimes wish Troy was a little more pro-Cowboy. I don't listen to any of them, I turn on the Cowboys radio broadcast and mute the TV....they are pro-Cowboy, and I love it.

I am a Cowboys fan and I heard Troy on numerous occasions during the game, especailly towards the end, giving props to the Arizona defense on getting pressure on Romo and what a dangerous receiving sorps the Cards have, talking about how far Warner has come since he left the Rams, I heard him giving Wisenhunt props..where is this coming from? You all are whacked if you think Troy is biased. Troy , keep up the great work. All these chumps will be eating their own dookie when you enter the Hall of Fame as an announcer as well as a player!!!!!!!!!!

Boomer is off his rocker as usual. Troy actually goes out of his way to not show any bias. In fact most Cowboy fans wish he would. But he is a PRO...Something obviously Boomer never will be.
Methinks, he is a petty jealous type who wishes he had Troy's Talent on & off the field.

his positive comment about that Cards were like after thoughts to cover his pro-cowboys stance
he is a good announcer, but he shouldn't be doing cowboy games unless he want to do local radio

Boofer is as anti-Dallas as they come. He was a crap quarterback and is an even worse commentator. The Cowboys have been the talk of the league the last couple of years; there's not a hell of a lot to say about Arizona besides that they're improving and they deserved to win on Sunday.
Please quit your day job, Boofer. You absolutely suck. Aikman was 100 times the quarterback you ever were and 10 times the broadcaster you are today.

Everybody, whether they like it or not, is talking about the Cowboys. This year a bit more than previous years, but eveybody talks about the Cowboys. It's a matter of football fact!
Hey, in Detroit, the news sports commentators refer to "News from Valley Ranch" as if everyone should know where Valley Ranch is; and everybody probably does!
All pre, post, and all the in-between-game shows talk about is the Cowboys.
Troy Aikman, Cowboy or not, is a part of the media after all.
There are are few teams in pro sports that peolpe (commetnators included) tend to like or are fascinated by; i.e. the Red Wings, Yankees, Red Sox, Lakers, Pistons, etc.
It's the Cowboys after all. It's the talk of the town.

I agree with Boomer, I also watched the game. And if you recall Romo lost like three fumbles and Troy had absolutely nothing to say about those terrible calls. And it's funny, Cause on the first should be fumble lost No body in the world heard a whistle. That should have been the first seven pionts for Arizona not a Dallas score. I like Troy, and if he's not bias why is it that he is always broadcasting most if not all cowboys games.I also think FOX pays him for that, if you haven't noticed, Watch next game and you'll see him standing on the side right next to the Dallas Cowboys Banner. All Troy needs to do in the next cowboys victory, Is give that big ole banner a mighty hug and a kiss. While yelling HOW BOUT THEM COWBOYS. Cowboys should have lost by at least 14 to 17 pionts. Thanks for making it a close game reffs.

I watched that game he broadcasted and maybe he didn't say enough positive things about how the Cardinals were kicking his old team's butt, but I was actually surprised at how "non-pro-Cowboy" his approach was. I like Boomer too, but he can be overly opinionated sometimes, like in this case.

As the writer stated he is human and probably does have some feelings for his old team. I think he does a good job of being neutral. Ever watch the half time show with Jimmy, Terry, Howie, Cowher, etc... You can't find more bias then those guys into where their loyalties are. I'm fine with either approach. It is nice to see some guys try to remain non-bias and announce the game, and it is fun to see some guys really show their support for their favorite team. Lord knows I'm Cowboys bias!
