Shutdown Corner - NFL

The debate regarding the "team of the '00s" remains open for a while longer, but the Cleveland Browns don't really factor into that one. Sorry if I burst any bubbles there.

"Team of the '10s," though? Eric Mangini has some thoughts on that. He told the Boston Globe that he sees "remarkable similarities" between the 2010 Browns and the 2000 Patriots.

"It was top-heavy financially, there were tough decisions that had to be made, and we didn’t have much success that first year. There are remarkable similarities between the situations.

"I don’t think we won any popularity contests there. You can look at the clips. The other thing is that with the staff we had, the approach we had, we kept getting better, but it took a while. At one point in that second year, we were 1-3, but we didn’t change the approach, and then we went on a streak.

"That wasn’t a function of getting hot. It was a function of two years of work. You don’t know when that moment will strike, but they’ve been rolling since."

Tough decisions to be made? No success? Not winning any popularity contests? Check, check and check. A staff that stuck to the system and kept seeing improvements in the team? Well, we'll see.

Truthfully, Mangini's notion of the Browns right having a Patriots-like future isn't that crazy. It's easy to poke fun at the Browns now (which is why I enjoy it so much), but who can predict what's going to happen from week-to-week in the NFL, let alone year-to-year? And decade-to-decade? Who knows? The London Dentists might be the team of the 2010s.

Anyway, if you're a Browns fan planning to take part in the big protest on Monday night, feel free, and I hope it makes you feel better. Keep in mind, though, that the team is trying, and someone there does have a long-term vision. Not all bad teams enjoy such luxuries.

Gracias, Pro Football Talk.

Eric Mangini could'nt coach his way out of a paper bag. Does anybody really believe anything he says? Worst of all is that somebody is wasting his employeers time by writing about the Browns. Keep up the good work and you to may be considered with the genius Mangini.

    YOU SIR, ARE WRONG!
In what way can you draw the conclusion that of all the bad teams in the league, that we, the Cleveland Browns, are one that has a long-term vision?
They are on the cusp of changing quarterbacks for the 2nd time in one season. They just fired their GM mainly because they did their hiring all bass ackwards when they hired Mangini first and let him pick his own GM. Now they're flirting with Mike Holmgren, who is an outstanding coach but a questionable GM.
We could have hired a number of other coaches over the offseason, but Lerner hires Mangini before most of the other coaches have even left their previous team. He didn't even take the time to interview the others. Lerner thinks he is smarter than everyone else. Maybe in soccer he is, but not in football.
    .....long-term vision........

I keep saying that we cannot keep changing coaches. Continuity in the coaching positions is the key to success. Only time will tell if Mangini gets the time he deserves, but I do think a football mind in the organization, besides the coach, will make my beloved, lowely Browns build for a bright future.
Here is what I would do, before this years draft...
    1) Cut Brady Quinn...he is worthless, and is taking up a roster spot.(Ratliff can do just as well)
    2) Cut Jamal Lewis now, and get a look at Jennings, possibly sign Larry Johnson for the rest of the season for third downs.(Its not like we are going to get a first down anyhow)
    3) Release McDonald....(need I say more)
    4) Find an offensive coordinator, and bring him in now, to get a jump on next year. I do not know who the goofy guy is calling the plays, but I can see he is no genius.(enough said)
    5) Make all the receivers on the squad, tape a football to thier hands to show them where it belongs!!(only remove it on gameday)
6)Sign Shaun Rogers, and Josh Cribbs to long term deals, and build the team around those 2 players.
7)Do not boycot the Monday night game, as it is a spit in the face to all Browns fans.Mr. Lerner should offer a free beer or somthing to the fans in the stadium on this Mondays game, to make sure the nation see's that the Browns fans love thier team.
I know I have sparked an argument, and I can accept that, but this team is in dire need of an enema. Let me also say, that I love my Browns, and only wish them well. We need to stay the cours, and let this coach do his thing, with his drafting, and his type of players.

    This team is disgusting.
DA is making Tim Couch look good.
Brady Quinn is probably not the answer, but he hasn't had enough time to prove it yet.
We DO need to quit running coaches out of town and give one time to install HIS system with HIS players and see, but at the same time I can't look back at one of the coaches we've had in the past 5 or 6 years and think that we should have kept him.
If we start playing Quinn as soon as he is no longer able to get 70% of the snaps for the year, what kind of message does that send to every player in the NFL?? Who will want to play for Cleveland?? not that anyone does anyway... except for BRADY QUINN...who practically begged to be a Brown. Now they're going to do him dirty and put him in once he is out of reach of getting his bonus.
And for God's sake, pay Josh Cribbs.

ZACH......Give it up on Quinn, and DA. Cut Quinn, Keep Da, and go get a journeyman next year....Maybe the dogwonder Vick.
Neither DA or Quinn will win with this team, only watch thier skills diminish. Quinn is ruined already, and DA is close.

Mangina just wants to tease Randy Lerner into not firing his asss.
I truly believe that Mangini really believes that he can turn the Browns into a Patriot like team. I believe I will win the lottery some day. I think the odds of either happening are about the same.

Great points by....Paula's Old Man.....But I dont know how much longer i can take this???......Already been the roughest 40 yrs of my life.....guess I can stand 3 more yrs of disappointment....maybe.
If they don't pursue RB in the 1st ir 2nd round in the draft....my time frame maybe shortened and the gear may be burned......Love the RB/KR from Clemson...CJ Spiller....guy has speed to burn and the thought of him and Cribbs returning kick-offs and punt returns would at least give us a chance of ending up in the end zone. Spiller's speed also will make our O-line look like all-pros. NEEEEED to get this guy!!!......BTW...not a Clemson alumn.....

I am not here saying that Quinn is better than DA, or even better than Ryan Leaf or Akili Smith. But I AM saying that if we're willing to give DA half the season to show us how not to play QB, why don't we give Brady the rest of this season to show us HIS impression on how not to play QB?
What makes the difference? Lets just MAKE SURE that they're both as horrible as they seem. DA is undeniably [profane]tay. Lets watch Brady F it all up for 7 or 8 games and then we can get rid of them both.

I agree pstanos@... , that the RB position is the greatest need on this team, to have any chance of rebuilding, but I am also afraid of the William Green, or Kijanna Carter effect from this. We know Lewis has had it, and has lost a step in the past few years, it was a great bridge, and I personally thank Lewis for giving what he has, but his time is over, and he is just dimeaning himself being on our horrible team.
11 draft picks, could mean a world of difference, if a few descent free agents come over to Cleveland, but I do not see anyone wanting to be in Cleveland....agreeing with the post from Zach on that issue.ut a 1st round QB is a waste, definitly should use the first round for defensive, offensive line, or a RB.
I think these needs need to be addressed, before Mangini can even be fired.
1)We have to learn to run the ball. (maybe a receiver catch one)
2)We have to learn to stop the run.
3)Someone in the secondary needs to help out if the Linebackers have to do all coverage.
And I am sorry Zach, but Brady had his chance. I beleive it was 6 1/2 games total. I do not recall him moving the ball except in the preseason games....ever!!!!!
