NBA - Sports Rumors

“AllenJust when you were ready to give Allen Iverson(notes) the benefit of the doubt and say, OK, maybe the whole situation with the Detroit Pistons wasn't his fault, he goes and pulls out a little hissy fit in Memphis.

Iverson has returned to action with the Memphis Grizzlies after recovering from a partial left hamstring tear and did pretty well:11 points in 18 minutes against the Sacramento Kings.

Iverson was disappointed with the number of minutes played, according to FanHouse. "I had no problems (with the hamstring)," Iverson said afterward. "I had a problem with my butt from sitting on that bench so long. That's the only thing I got a problem with."

Some reporters before the game even suggested to Grizzlies coach Lionel Hollins that Iverson should be starting, which he seemed to find ridiculous: "He hasn't even been with the team until just a couple of days ago," Hollins said. "He's going to come off the bench. He hasn't played all preseason, hasn't played the three regular-season games (leading up to Sacramento). He only practiced three days in training camp before he got hurt so there's no way I would trot him out there in a starting role."

It looks like it's going to be a long season fro Iverson and the Grizzlies.

iverson should be starting ahead of conley, who is the worst starting point guard in the nba.
i don't see conley ever improving to an acceptable level for a starter in the nba.
while i can understand hollins' decision to bring allen along slowly in his 1st game, if his minutes isn't in the mid 30's by game 3, i would have a problem.
iverson is clearly the best player on the team. if the grizz are committed to win (it seems they aren't rebuilding since they acquired randolph and iverson), then start iverson now.

I think the coaching staff should gave Iverson a chance, to show he should really start.. But he must prove that he must be a good team leader and be an effective PG, much more better than Conley

im also pissed off about the media and david stern's effort to sabotage iverson's rep and his career.
like a.i. said, a player of his resume shouldn't be coming off the bench.
shaq obviously isn't coming off the bench in cleveland behind ilgauskas. rip is starting ahead of ben gordon. grant hill is also a starter. all of them are clearly fading and not necessarily better than the options from the bench.
on the other hand, iverson's competition is conley, who is a huge bust. fire hollins if he has such a man crush on conley. i wouldn't be surprised if he does cuz kyle lowry (who is better than conley) was driven out of memphis after he took over.

How DUMB are the Memphis Grizzlies:
1.They get Milicic and Kwame Brown, thats like putting Michael Jackson and Marilyn Manson inside an orphanage.
2.They let go of Pau Gasol for nobody.. see above..
3.They get Iverson, a hall of famer point guard, but had him sitting on the bench in a disrespectful manner going off the bench for a guy named Conley..
4.They think Rudy Gay is not worth the contract extension he deserves...
5.They still have Lionel Hollins as coach...

as a Philadelphian. i had to put up with iverson's selfish attitude for years. memphis is a circus and AI is just one of the clowns. he is a fading player that the grizzs signed in a desperate attempt to sell some tickets. the nuggets ship him off for billups and he makes them a championship contender. AI has never made his teammates better. he is not a point guard; he is a gunner; a low percentage outside shooter and a undersized defensive liability.
he is a playground player with great moves but he never has been a winner.
"practice, you talking about practice" they don't put you on sports center highjlights for practice

    wow haters in here.
iverson averaged 7.5 assists in his last full season with denver. how is he not a point guard? the only reason karl started anthony carter was he didn't wanna start j.r. smith. smith didn't even start after iverson left. dahntay jones did.
lebron never made his teammates better either. kobe never made his teammates better. but david stern gave pau gasol to the lakers for free and cavs have the 2nd highest payroll in the league cuz lebron always blame his teammates for his team's shortcomings.
it doesn't matter what iverson's percentage is. the fact is that he draws a lot of fouls. the ability to draw fouls separate superstars like d-wade, iverson, kobe, lebron, etc from ballhogs like rudy gay, mayo, joe johnson, etc.

Oh no, he's saying he wants to be on the court. How terrible!
All Iverson's saying is he wants to play, how anyone can be so stupid as to interpret this as "throwing fits" is plain silly

I watched that entire game and Iverson definitely should have been in a lot more. I can understand maybe not starting yet, but he should have been in late in the game when it was so close. Hollins only put him in for the last 1.6 seconds of crunch time and he didn't even get the ball anyway. Then he didn't put him in until the game was basically over in OT. The Griz probably would have won if AI had been able to play a bigger role. He was playing and shooting well when he was in.

Iverson is an an ignorant, selfish goon. Anyone who thinks otherwise is clearly riding his jock. Signing Iverson was the worst thing the Griz have done since trading Pau. Iverson is a cancer on every team his signs with.

Also, Rudy Gay and OJ Mayo are BOTH better than Iverson. dagoldeneagle clearly believes that this is 2001 and Iverson is still worth anything.

It can't be AI's fault. He is who we thought he was. So given that, the people who made the mistake was the Grizzlies. without them signing him, he'd be out of the league. they wanted the drama that is AI. It's their fault. Why they wanted him I don't know. Live with Lionel and at some point just like Joe D. you can send him home.

Why should the Grizzlies be surprised by any of this? They didn't know Iverson would want to be playing 35-40 minutes a game, getting 20-25 shot attempts a game, without practicing or any exhibition games? Of course he is going to complain and make himself the center of attention. That's what he has done his entire career. Problem now is, his game can't back it up anymore. He's not the man anymore, he's not the go to guy who can carry a team by himself for a full season like he used to. The biggest issue now is trying to convince him of that. He could've been signed by a number of contending teams this offseason if he were willing to take a more limited role off the bench. Instead, because he still feels he is the man, the only 2 teams who showed any sort of interest in him, mainly just to increase ticket sales, were the Clippers and Grizzlies. It looks like the beginning of the end and a sad ending to a once great career.

    are you kidding?
rudy gay are mayo are bigger ballhogs than iverson ever was.
gay doesn't draw any contacts or fouls and he averages 1.7 assists per game.
he is a low effiency player.
iverson constantly gets on the free throw line

Wait a minute, This guy was lucky to get a job let alone dictate when he plays. The guy didn't make practice and your gonna slot him in as a starter. WRONG. The guy is on a minimum contract. Let him work to get in the line up. Memphis was the only team to even offer a contract. Remember this was his meal ticket back into the NBA, Let him show he deserves it. Every sports announcer said the same thing. If he wants to throw a temper tantrum, Sit his butttt down. We'll see who signs him next time. Daaa! No One.

I totally agree w/DAGOLDENEAGLE.....Gay/Mayo passed the ball only a few times! Why in world would they have a VET like AI sitting on bench for most of the game. He scored 11 points in 17 minutes. Increase those minutes and you would get more points. Conley is some TRASH!!!!!!! I dont care what anybody say about AI he is still one of the best PG in the NBA look at his RESUME ppl!!!!!!!!!!!
