Red Sox want Yankees' Hideki Matsui?

“HidekiHideki Matsui(notes) put on quite an offensive show in Game 6 of the World Series as his New York Yankees made the final push past the Philadelphia Phillies to become champions. And the Boston Red Sox appear to want a piece of that, according to the Boston Globe.

The Globe reports that a Japanese sports Web site is saying that the Red Sox would love to have free-agent Matsui come to their team. According to the Japanese site, Nikkan Sports, the Red Sox are ready to offer a multi-year deal to the 35-year-old designated hitter.

Matsui has made about $13 million a year for each of the last four, but he is apparently ready to lower his price for his next deal to $8 million annually. Couldn't be cheaper, right?

There is plenty of doubt in Boston that this story has any truth to it, but it's always fun when a Yankees or Red Sox player switches sides.

    Hmmm, I just dont see this happening. I like his way of approaching pitchers and he would be good to have on any team, YET unless you can stick him in Right and get rid of Drew, I dont see how this can work!!! We need Bay back and try to make a bid for DOC up in Toronto. EYES ON THE PRIZE!!

    They are not going to get hime they dont want him. They are doing this for to reasons 1. to show Bay's agent they are looking for any one 2. to drive cost up on the Yanks.

    Ortiz is their DH. Matsui can not play the outfield. This is just to get the Yankees attention.

    park #5- Nice way to drive up the price huh. Go from 13 mil to 8mil...thanks for driving it up for the Yankees...funny thing is if this was the Jets this would be considered tampering since teams cant discuss finances until after 11/20.

    Well they may have been able to spend 8 million on him this year so if they want him back it will cost more then 8 mil. Hence driving the cost up. Thanks

    you know baseball? I don't think you do. Matsui would love to get 8 mils from yanks. The question is Will the Yankees want him back in 2010. Personally, I wouldn't. Posada is getting old and can save that DH spot for him. I would drop Damon and Matsui and sign Matt Holiday. Sign Holiday for 20 mills a year, would still save $$$ compare damon + matsui.
