Player Notes
Mariners optioned LHP Roenis Elias to Triple-A Tacoma; re-assigned RHPs Mark Lowe, Jordan Pries, Mumba Rivera and Kevin Correia, LHP Joe Saunders, OFs Shawn O'Malley and Endy Chavez and C John Baker to minor league camp.

Advice: Elias getting sent down means Taijuan Walker has officially won the fifth starter spot, although the M's reportedly could use a modified six-man rotation. The left-hander struggled this spring with a 6.75 ERA over 14 2/3 innings.

Bob Dutton of the Tacoma News Tribune reports that "signs point" to the Mariners using "what amounts to a modified six-man rotation" this season.

Advice: The main reasoning behind the idea would be to hold Taijuan Walker's and James Paxton's innings down, although it would serve to keep all of the Mariners' first five starters more fresh down the stretch. Roenis Elias would be in line to serve as Seattle's "sixth" starter after losing out on the fifth spot to Walker (the Mariners have yet to officially name Walker the No. 5 guy), although Jordan Pries and Danny Hultzen could get a look at some point, as well.

Mariners manager Lloyd McClendon said Friday that Roenis Elias will get another start this spring.

Advice: McClendon said it might come in a minor league game. All signs are pointing towards Taijuan Walker winning the fifth spot in the Mariners' rotation, but the skipper isn't ready to declare a winner just yet. Elias has struggled this spring with a 6.75 ERA and 8/7 K/BB ratio over 14 2/3 innings.

Roenis Elias struggled in Thursday's start against the Brewers, yielding six runs in three innings.

Advice: Elias may have lost his shot at a spot in the Mariners' rotation with the flimsy performance. He was taken for eight hits while walking three and striking out one on the afternoon. Taijuan Walker has been lights out this spring and has all but wrapped up the No. 5 spot in the rotation. Elias is likely headed to Triple-A Tacoma to begin the season.
