Player Notes
Carlos Martinez blanked the Mets for six innings, allowing just three hits, in the Cardinals' 5-4 win Wednesday.

Advice: Martinez also legged out an infield single after Wilmer Flores chose to hang back on his bouncer to shortstop. Martinez, named the Cardinals' fifth starter Monday, is 2-0 with a 2.86 ERA and 21 strikeouts in 22 innings this spring. Because of his upside, he shouldn't be left unowned in any mixed leagues.

Carlos Martinez has been officially named as the Cardinals' fifth starter.

Advice: That was the speculation as soon as Jaime Garcia had a recurrence of shoulder issues, but it's now official. Meanwhile, Marco Gonzales will be optioned to Triple-A. Martinez has immense upside and is well worth a flier in most mixed fantasy leagues.

According to MLB.com's Jenifer Langosch, "every indication is that" Carlos Martinez will open the 2015 regular season as the Cardinals' fifth starter.

Advice: Jaime Garcia was probably the frontrunner for the spot as recently as last week, but his shoulder issues have suddenly resurfaced. Martinez possesses terrific raw stuff and is worth a flier in pretty much every standard mixed fantasy league. Marco Gonzales will presumably be optioned to Triple-A Memphis when camp breaks.

Carlos Martinez allowed one run over five innings and struck out six Friday against the Nationals.

Advice: Martinez has been strong enough to claim a rotation spot, but it's hard to see the Cardinals picking him over Jaime Garcia if Garcia finishes the spring healthy. Garcia can't be sent down, and he's not viewed as an option for the bullpen. Martinez can be optioned out or transitioned back to a relief role very easily.
