Player Notes
GM Jeff Luhnow said the Astros aren't considering Evan Gattis as a backup option at catcher.

Advice: "Obviously, he's caught in the past, and having a guy on the roster that can catch has value," said Luhnow. "But he's our DH." Gates started 11 games in left field last year but hasn't caught since 2014. For now, the Astros are set with Jason Castro and Max Stassi behind the plate. Gattis is coming off hernia surgery and might not be ready for Opening Day.

Evan Gattis (hernia surgery) indicated Wednesday that he is already close to doing light baseball activity.

Advice: Gattis had surgery Tuesday for a sports hernia and will miss a large chunk of Grapefruit League play, but there's a chance he could be ready for Opening Day. The 29-year-old slugger said Wednesday that he will "start doing very light baseball activities shortly as long as pain permits." He's walking one mile a day right now and deemed himself sore, but optimistic. Last season, Gattis slashed .246/.285/.463 with 27 homers and 88 RBI for the Astros.

Evan Gattis recently underwent hernia surgery and will be sidelined for the next 4-6 weeks.

Advice: The operation shouldn't have any long-term effects, but it could sideline Gattis for the bulk of spring training and possibly threaten his availability for Opening Day. If Gattis does get a late start to the season, Jake Marisnick, Preston Tucker and Marwin Gonzalez would figure to be in line to pick up the slack. Gattis batted .246/.285/.463 with 27 homers and 88 RBI in his first season with the Astros.
