Player Notes
Starling Marte (illness) went 0-for-3 with a strikeout in his return to the lineup Friday against the Phillies.

Advice: Marte was a late scratch from Thursday’s lineup due to flu-like symptoms, but he should be fine moving forward. Despite going hitless Friday, the 27-year-old owns a strong .311/.362/.459 batting line this season.

Starling Marte was a late scratch from the Pirates starting lineup on Thursday due to flu-like symptoms.

Advice: Marte was in the initial lineup, but was feeling a bit under the weather and manager Clint Hurdle wanted to play it safe and give him a night off. Gregory Polanco will shift to left field with Matt Joyce entering the lineup to play right.

Starling Marte finished the night 2-for-4 with a stolen base and a run scored on Wednesday.

Advice: He added a walk as well. Marte's power is down this year but he has taken his running game to a new level. He set a career high with 19 home runs last year but only has seven this year. He has already stolen 32 bases this season after stealing 30 in each of the last two campaigns. His owners will happily take the trade-off given that steals are so rare around the league this year.

Starling Marte whacked a go-ahead solo home run in the top of the 18th inning in Sunday's 2-1 win over the Nationals.

Advice: The Pirates held a 1-0 lead in the ninth, which was obliterated on a solo homer by Daniel Murphy. The two clubs went on to (essentially) play another baseball game, as the proceedings wouldn't end for nine more innings. Mercifully, Marte launched a monster go-ahead solo shot to left off Oliver Perez with two outs in the 18th to finally, finally snap that seemingly eternal 1-1 tie. For the season, he is slashing .315/.364/.465 with seven homers, 34 RBI, 31 steals and 49 runs scored over 327 at-bats. He will have to pick it up on the power front if he wants to match the career-best 19 homers he launched in 2015.
