Player Notes
J.D. Martinez (elbow) will begin a minor league rehab assignment Tuesday with Triple-A Toledo.

Advice: Martinez will be eased in as the DH as he makes his way back from a non-displaced fracture of the radial neck of his right elbow. He admitted Monday that he'll have to deal with pain for the rest of the season, but he wants to make it back with the Tigers still in the mix. "My bat worries me more than my throwing," said Martinez. "Timing-wise and arm-wise. I feel it puts more stress on my elbow hitting than it does throwing."

J.D. Martinez (elbow) took batting practice on Thursday.

Advice: It's the first time he's done so since suffering a non-displaced fracture of the radial neck of his right elbow. That's the good news. The bad news is Martinez still isn't feeling 100 percent when he throws. It's possible the Tigers could bring him back to serve as a designated hitter initially. "It still bothers him to throw, not so much to hit," manager Brad Ausmus said. "We’re trying to figure it out. If he can hit and we think he’s close to being able to throw, when is the time to send him down and maybe have him DH for ‘X’ number of games and then put him in the outfield so he gets some at-bats?"

J.D. Martinez (elbow) could take batting practice on the field Thursday.

Advice: Assuming the weather cooperates, it would be his first time taking BP since suffering a fracture in his right elbow last month. Tigers manager Brad Asmus said Monday that Martinez is still a couple of weeks away, but he's making progress.

Tigers manager Brad Ausmus said Monday that J.D. Martinez (elbow) is still "a couple of weeks away."

Advice: Martinez was reportedly playing catch Monday at Comerica Park, but Ausmus said that he still "has a little bit of pain" when he throws. He's making progress, but the Tigers are going to bring him along slowly. Martinez was given a timetable of 4-6 weeks when he suffered a fracture in his right elbow on June 16. It looks like he has a chance to make it back by the long end of that window.
