Player Notes
Pitching for a second straight day, Dellin Betances gave up a homer to one of the two guys he faced in relief Wednesday against the Mets.

Advice: Betances relieved Masahiro Tanaka with two outs in the fifth and gave up the homer to Juan Lagares. His stuff simply isn't very explosive right now, and while the Yankees keep saying that his stuff improved considerably last year following spring training, it's still a definite source of concern. It could lead to Andrew Miller potentially getting more save chances in the early going.

Dellin Betances admitted after Tuesday's game that his velocity is "nowhere near where it should be."

Advice: Betances was regularly in the mid-to-high 90s during his breakthrough season last year, but he topped out at 94 mph on Tuesday and now has a 5.40 ERA across five appearances this spring. However, Betances and Yankees manager Joe Girardi are convinced that the velocity will come as he pitches more. He's scheduled to pitch on back-to-back days for the first time this spring with another appearance on Wednesday. The Yankees have yet to commit to Betances as their closer and might rely on multiple pitchers for save opportunities in the early part of the season.

Yankees manager Joe Girardi said Sunday that he may not announce a true closer for the team coming out of spring training.

Advice: Girardi stated, "Bullpens are subject to change depending on how guys are doing, and it really hasn’t been a worry of mine because I think we have more than one candidate and guys that can do it. I don’t think it’s necessary that we name (one person), you’re going to be our closer right now." The popular thought all along has been that Dellin Betances would fill the role vacated by David Robertson, but Girardi insists that there are many capable options in his bullpen who can get outs in the ninth inning such as Andrew Miller and David Carpenter, in addition to Betances.
