ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — Adam Ottavino has been as untouchable as any pitcher in baseball. He proved “human,” as Mets manager Carlos Mendoza put it, at a poorly timed moment. Ottavino allowed his first hit and first run since April 4, which allowed the Rays to escape with a 3-1 win at Tropicana Field on Saturday, when Christian Scott's brilliant debut was spoiled. Austin Shenton did not have time to think about it. With the Rays' rally slowly developing in the eighth inning Saturday night, manager Kevin Cash told the rookie left-handed hitter to get ready to go in for veteran hitter Harold Ramirez. Two batters later, Shenton found himself pinch-hitting with two outs and the bases loaded in a tie game. “I was just trying to trust my preparation and just go in and put together a good [at-bat],” Shenton said.
The Mets lost 3-1 on the road to the Tampa Bay Rays Saturday night, spoiling what could have been a memorable night for newcomer Christian Scott and his team.
