Player Notes
Luis Valbuena will undergo season-ending surgery on his strained right hamstring on Thursday.

Advice: Valbuena came down the hamstring strain back in late July and then suffered a setback last week while running. Alex Bregman has since taken over as the Astros' primary third baseman, with Yulieski Gurriel recently working into the mix. Valbuena finishes the 2016 season with a .260/.357/.459 batting line, 13 home runs, and 40 RBI in 90 games. He will be a free agent this winter at age 31.

Astros general manager Jeff Luhnow indicated Monday that surgery hasn't been ruled out for Luis Valbuena's right hamstring injury.

Advice: Valbuena landed on the disabled list at the end of July with a right hamstring strain and suffered a setback while running on Friday. He's scheduled to see a doctor on Wednesday to decide the next step. "There's a possibility that there will be some surgical solution to his problem, which will definitely take him out from coming back this year," said Luhnow. "But we'll wait until the doctors assess what's going on."

Luis Valbuena (hamstring) suffered a setback while running on Friday.

Advice: He's headed back to Houston, where he'll be looked at by team doctors. Valbuena was getting close to a rehab assignment but now that's on hold. Now that Alex Bregman has arrived in the major leagues and is manning third base, Valbuena won't have to rush his recovery.

The Astros hope Luis Valbuena (hamstring) is ready to begin a rehab assignment early next week.

Advice: Valbuena ran on Tuesday and Wednesday and has also resumed other baseball activities. "Obviously the next few days are going to tell us a little bit more about the realistic side of it," manager A.J. Hinch said Thursday. "We'd like to push him the most we can without jeopardizing the rehab he's already done, so the running intensity is going to increase (and) the groundball intensity will increase. The batting practice is fine - he feels nothing in batting practice. So we're in this area where the harder we push him, the more vulnerable he can become, but it's time that we need to push him a little bit and see if a rehab assignment is possible maybe while we're in Pittsburgh."
