Player Notes
Marlins released C Jarrod Saltalamacchia.

Advice: This confirms a report from CBS Sports' Jon Heyman. The Marlins expressed optimism for finding a trade partner after they designated Saltalamacchia for assignment last week, but nothing has materialized. This means that the Marlins will be responsible for the remainder of his three-year, $21 million contract and he'll be free to sign with another club at the major league minimum. He should have no shortage of suitors as a free agent. The Royals, Rays, and Diamondbacks are among the teams who have been mentioned as possibilities.

Chris Cotillo of MLB Daily Dish reports that the Royals, Rays and Diamondbacks are each believed to be in the mix for Jarrod Saltalamacchia.

Advice: The veteran backstop was designated for assignment by the Marlins earlier in the week and the team is looking to trade him before he becomes a free agent. Each of the three teams mentioned would view Saltalamacchia as a backup.

Andy McCullough of the Kansas City Star reports that the Royals have had internal discussions about pursuing Jarrod Saltalamacchia.

Advice: McCullough notes that the talks are "very preliminary" at this point. It appears that the Marlins will be able to trade Saltalamacchia after designating him for assignment, but some of the interested clubs are looking at him only as a backup. In addition to the Royals, the Mariners, Diamondbacks, Indians and Red Sox also appear to have interest. Miami would obviously have to eat the majority of what remains on Salty's three-year, $21 million contract to make a deal happen.

FOX Sports' Jon Morosi reports that the Mariners are having internal discussions about whether to pursue Jarrod Saltalamacchia.

Advice: Saltalamacchia was designated for assignment on Monday, so the Marlins have 10 days to find a trade. Otherwise, he'll hit free agency and can sign at the major league minimum. The Mariners are currently relying on a combination of Mike Zunino and Jesus Sucre, so Salty could at least make sense as a backup option. The Diamondbacks are also reportedly considering the possibility.

Jon Morosi of FOX Sports hears that the Angels are not involved in trade talks with the Marlins about Jarrod Saltalamacchia.

Advice: The Angels haven't gotten much production out of Chris Iannetta and Drew Butera so far this season, but they don't see Saltalamacchia as an upgrade over what they already have. The 29-year-old was designated for assignment on Monday and the Marlins reportedly expect to trade him. The Diamondbacks, Red Sox, Indians, and Mariners have been mentioned as potential landing spots.

Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic reports that the Diamondbacks are having internal discussions about whether to pursue Jarrod Saltalamacchia.

Advice: Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe says a total of five teams have expressed interest in Salty and that Marlins general manager Dan Jennings expects to trade the catcher. ESPN's Jerry Crasnick adds that, in addition to the D'Backs, the Red Sox, Indians and Mariners are also possible landing spots for Salty. Arizona would be an ideal landing spot for him, as he'd be in line to play regularly and would be in a hitter's park.

Marlins activated C Jarrod Saltalamacchia from the paternity leave list; designated him for assignment.

Advice: Salty was signed to a three-year, $21 million free agent contract before the 2014 season, but he struggled in his first summer with Miami and was off to a terrible start in 2015. 24-year-old prospect J.T. Realmuto has emerged as the Marlins' best option at catcher. Salty will presumably pass through waivers because of the money he is owed. He would then hit the free agent market, and should draw considerable interest there.
