Player Notes
Diamondbacks recalled RHP Shelby Miller from Triple-A Reno.

Advice: Miller will return to the Diamondbacks' rotation on Wednesday afternoon in San Francisco after spending the last seven weeks in the minor leagues. The right-hander yielded four earned runs on nine hits over just 4 2/3 innings in his final start with Triple-A Reno and returns to a hideous 7.14 major league ERA. He can't be trusted in standard fantasy leagues.

Shelby Miller's time in the minor leagues this year could delay his free agency.

Advice: If Miller isn't called up before Thursday, he won't accrue enough days on the active roster to reach four years of service time in the big leagues. That would push his free agency back from 2018 to 2019, giving the Diamondbacks an extra year of team control. Arizona's decision to acquire Miller for top prospect Dansby Swanson was one of the more misguided trades in recent memory.

Shelby Miller will make another start at Triple-A Reno on Thursday.

Advice: Miller has pitched well in his four outings down on the farm since being optioned to Triple-A in mid-July. Diamondbacks chief baseball officer Tony La Russa said on Monday that the 25-year-old right-hander has shown enough that a return to the majors could be coming soon. The situation will be reevaluated after Miller's Thursday outing. He struggled mightily in 14 starts with the big league club earlier this season, sporting a 7.14 ERA in that space. Hopefully his time at Triple-A has allowed him to work out some of the kinks here.

Diamondbacks chief baseball officer Tony La Russa indicated Sunday that Shelby Miller is close to returning to the major league rotation.

Advice: Miller registered his fourth consecutive quality start on Saturday at Triple-A Reno, throwing eight innings and allowing three runs versus the Triple-A affiliate of the Giants. "We’ll brainstorm about if his next start is with us or the one after," La Russa said Sunday. "This is all good. He’s getting some real good experience, having some success and figuring things out, getting his delivery together and his mind right." Miller has a brutal 7.14 ERA in 14 starts this season with Arizona.

According to Bob Nightengale of USA Today, Diamondbacks ownership shot down a trade at the non-waiver deadline that would have sent Shelby Miller to the Marlins.

Advice: Nightengale's source claims that owner Ken Kendrick and president Derrick Hall intervened on the deal because it "just wouldn't look good" after what the Snakes had to give up for Miller last winter. Diamondbacks ownership also reportedly vetoed a plan to replace manager Chip Hale this summer with Triple-A skipper Phil Nevin -- a plan devised by chief baseball officer Tony La Russa and general manager Dave Stewart. This whole thing's a mess. We wouldn't be surprised to see a major front-office shakeup this fall in Arizona.
