Player Notes
Javier Baez belted a solo homer in Friday's win over the Orioles.

Advice: Kevin Gausman had made Baez look pretty silly earlier in the at-bat in the fifth inning, but he hung a 3-2 slider and the young infielder launched it over the bleachers in left field and onto Waveland Avenue. We've seen the good and the bad so far with Baez, as he has an ugly 31/4 K/BB ratio but is also one of just 10 active players with six home runs in his first 18 games.

Javier Baez will play shortstop for the Cubs while Starlin Castro is on the bereavement list.

Advice: Castro lost a cousin and three close friends to a car crash Wednesday in the Dominican Republic and could be gone for an entire week. This is a good opportunity for Baez, who has been playing primarily at second base since his promotion to the majors on August 5.

Javier Baez hit a two-run homer Monday in the Cubs' win over the Mets.

Advice: Baez also struck out twice, and has now fanned 24 times in 60 at-bats since his promotion to the major leagues. On the other hand, he is one of only two second basemen in the last 100 years to record five homers in his first 14 big league games. Jason Kipnis was the other.

Javier Baez struck out all four times he was up against the Brewers on Thursday.

Advice: At least he had plenty of company, as the Cubs fanned 16 times in all. It's Baez's second four-strikeout contest in 10 games as a major leaguer. That's as many as Cal Ripken Jr., Frank Thomas and Willie McCovey had in their entire careers.

Javier Baez went 2-for-4 and hit his fourth homer Wednesday versus the Brewers.

Advice: Four homers, two doubles and five singles in 41 at-bats for Baez. He has his weaknesses -- the altered wind patterns in Chicago are driving meteorologists nuts -- but the Cubs have to be pretty pleased with his play so far.
