Player Notes
Royals acquired INF/OF Ben Zobrist and cash considerations from the Athletics for RHP Aaron Brooks and LHP Sean Manaea.

Advice: The deal is official. Zobrist drew interest from a long list of contenders, but the Royals are going for it and paid the price to bring to bring him into the fold. The 34-year-old impending free agent has an .801 OPS over 67 games this season and can be used in the infield and the outfield. He should be a useful piece for Ned Yost and the first-place Royals.

FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal reports that the Royals are set to acquire Ben Zobrist from the Athletics.

Advice: Just in case it wasn't already clear after the Johnny Cueto deal, the Royals are going for it. Zobrist was a great fit for any contender because of his versatility and he could play second base or left field for Kansas City. The 34-year-old is batting .268/.354/.447 with six home runs and 33 RBI over 67 games this season. Jeff Passan of Yahoo sports hears that the Royals will send two pitchers back to Oakland in the deal.

Jane Lee of MLB.com reports that the Athletics are "deep" in trade talks involving Ben Zobrist and a deal could happen soon.

Advice: After dealing Scott Kazmir to the Astros last week and Tyler Clippard to the Mets on Monday, Zobrist is likely the next to go. The impending free agent has drawn interest from a long list of teams, including the Royals, Pirates, Angels, Cubs, Yankees, and Giants.

Andy McCullough of the Kansas City Star reports that the Royals are planning to stay locked in on the Ben Zobrist trade talks "until the end."

Advice: Zobrist is a fit for just about every contending team because of his defensive versatility, so it's anyone's guess at this point where he's going to wind up after the July 31 trade deadline. Kansas City made the biggest splash yet with its weekend acquisition of Reds ace Johnny Cueto, but McCullough notes that the club still has shoppable prospects. If it wasn't already apparent, the Royals are going all-in.

FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal reports that there are "no active discussions" between the Mets and Athletics regarding Ben Zobrist.

Advice: This directly conflicts with a report from Kristie Ackert of the New York Daily News, which said the two sides had already discussed which pieces the Mets would send to the A's. Rosenthal is the best in the business, so you've got to believe his source is legit. Zobrist will be a hot commodity this month.

Kristie Ackert of the New York Daily News reports that trade talks between the Mets and Athletics regarding Ben Zobrist have progressed.

Advice: Ackert says that the two sides "have gotten as far as discussing pieces" and that the A's "have identified the prospects" from the Mets that they want in exchange for Zobrist. However, the report adds that "nothing is imminent." An earlier report suggested that the Mets might balk at picking up the roughly $3 million remaining on Zobrist's contract for this season, but this newer reports suggests that's probably not the case.

WFAN's Eddie Coleman reports that the Mets are hesitant to trade for Ben Zobrist because they don't want to pick up the roughly $2-3 million remaining on his contract for the rest of the season.

Advice: That's embarrassing, if true. The Mets' money issues over the last few years have been no secret, but they're in dire need of some lineup help and Zobrist's contract is hardly unreasonable. It's hard to believe they're going to get any kind of real offensive upgrade if they're unwilling to take on any money. Zobrist will have many suitors, so the A's can move on quickly if the Mets are being stingy about money.

Bill Brink of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports that the Pirates have asked about Ben Zobrist of the Athletics.

Advice: The Pirates have also checked in on Diamondbacks infielder Cliff Pennington and Padres shortstop Clint Barmes as they try to get by with Josh Harrison and Jordy Mercer sidelined. Zobrist is the best player of the bunch and figures to be a very popular target leading up to the trade deadline, so Pennington or Barmes could be more realistic.
