Player Notes
Giants manager Bruce Bochy said the team is still deciding whether Matt Cain will make his next start.

Advice: Tim Hudson is the most likely candidate to take Cain's spot, if Cain is indeed removed from the rotation. The right-hander owns a 6.15 ERA and 1.58 WHIP through 10 starts. Cain is signed through the 2017 season with a $7.5 million buyout for 2018.

Matt Cain lost to the Cubs on Tuesday, surrendering six runs in five innings of work.

Advice: Cain allowed a well-struck three-run home run to Kyle Schwarber in the third inning, and Miguel Montero followed up in the fourth with a two-run shot of his own. They were two of eight hits the right-hander gave up along with two walks and three strikeouts. Cain now has 10 starts since making his season debut on July 2 and the results are ugly: he carries a 6.15 ERA with a 1.58 WHIP and a 38/17 K/BB ratio over 52 2/3 innings. He'll try to turn things around with a home start versus the Cardinals.

Matt Cain pitched six innings of two-run ball and struck out six Wednesday against the Cardinals.

Advice: Cain exited with a one-run lead, but it was gone in a flash. Still, it was a strong outing for him against a top team. Unfortunately, it's just his third quality start and fourth time he's lasted six innings in nine starts since he returned from the disabled list. At least it'll help solidify his spot in the rotation for now.
