RHP Dan Haren struck out a career-high 14 without walking a batter in a four-hit shutout of the Mariners.
The strikeout total was the second most without a walk in Angels history. LHP Frank Tanana struck out 17 and didn't walk a batter against the Rangers on June 21, 1975.
Haren was too proud to point to the lower back pain he had been experiencing for much of this season as the explanation for his 1-5 record and 4.37 ERA going into Thursday's start against the Mariners. "It hasn't helped," he said. "Even pitching 80 percent, I should have been getting better results than I was getting. I think it was obvious tonight my stuff was much better."

Recommendation: He struck out five and walked one, but the Angels managed to score just two runs in the losing effort and Haren's record now sits at 1-5 for the season. For his next outing, Haren is scheduled to face the Mariners at Safeco Field on Thursday.
