The NL champion Phillies have picked up Lee's $9 million option for 2010. The team announced the expected move on Friday, two days after losing the World Series to the New York Yankees. Lee's contract expires after next season, though general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. said the team is open to signing the star left-hander to a long-term deal. Advice: Lee, 31, was acquired from the Cleveland Indians on July 29 for four minor leaguers, and quickly became Philadelphia's ace. Lee posted a 3.39 ERA in 12 starts for the Phillies, then went 4-0 with a 1.56 mark in five postseason outings, including 2-0 in the World Series. |

Philadelphia has picked up the $9 million club option in Lee's contract for 2010, the team's official web site reports. Recommendation: This was a no-brainer given his performance for the Phillies last season. We'll have to see if there's any talk of adding an extension. |

LHP Cliff Lee said he had a brief conversation with manager Charlie Manuel before the Phillies elected not to start him on three days' rest in Game 4. Lee, 3-0 with a 0.54 ERA in four postseason starts, never has pitched on short rest in his career, and while he told Manuel he'd be comfortable taking the ball, the manager wasn't convinced. "I don't know. I thought I made it pretty clear," said Lee, who will start Game 5 Monday night. "I told him I would pitch whenever he wants me to pitch. 'I think I can do it. You make the calls.' That basically was the extent of it." Said Manuel, "You're asking Cliff Lee to do something that he has never did before, but we're also asking him to do it in a big, important place, and that's the World Series. I didn't have to think very long about that." |
