Player Notes
Tigers manager Brad Ausmus said Tuesday that whether Victor Martinez is in the lineup versus a right-hander will be a day-to-day decision.

Advice: Martinez has some soreness in his left knee and it bothers him most when batting left-handed. Ausmus plans to visit with the designated hitter each day when the club faces a righty to see how he feels before writing his name into the lineup. "He said he feels good," Ausmus said. "He actually looked a lot better [Monday] than he did the day before." The skipper added that the switch-hitting V-Mart has no plans to bat right-handed against a righty "at least as of right now."

Tigers manager Brad Ausmus admitted Sunday that Victor Martinez (knee) is "certainly not 100 percent."

Advice: V-Mart is battling soreness in his left knee, although Ausmus revealed that the discomfort is in the top of the knee and not in the area the designated hitter had surgically-repaired. It's more of an issue when Martinez bats left-handed, but Ausmus doesn't plan to sit V-Mart against any more righties as he did on Friday. Worth noting is that Martinez is hitless in seven at-bats since he tweaked the knee on April 11.

Victor Martinez (knee) is in the Tigers starting lineup on Saturday.

Advice: Martinez has been out of the lineup the entire week, partially due to playing in a National League park to begin the week, and partially due to his surgically-repaired left knee. It appears that it could be a lingering problem throughout the season, so expect Martinez to receive the occasional day off.

Tigers manager Brad Ausmus said Friday that soreness in Victor Martinez's surgically-repaired left knee is the reason for his absence from the lineup.

Advice: It was reported earlier that a sore back was keeping Martinez out, but evidently it's the knee that's the culprit. That's not encouraging given that V-Mart has already rested four out of the last five days after feeling a pinch in the knee last Saturday. Ausmus said that Martinez is available to pinch-hit, so it would stand to reason that the club doesn't think he'll be out much longer. Still, it's not great news.

Victor Martinez is not in Friday's lineup due to a sore back.

Advice: So it's his back, not his knee, that's keeping him out, which is a relief. It's not clear when Martinez tweaked his back, but it could have been that and not just the lack of the designated hitter option that's kept him out of action so far this week. V-Mart will try to take batting practice Friday.

Victor Martinez (knee) is not in the Tigers' lineup Friday.

Advice: Martinez was expected to (and did) sit out all three games in Pittsburgh with the designated hitter spot not available, but that he remains out Friday with the Tigers back home isn't a great sign. V-Mart tweaked his surgically-repaired left knee last Saturday and was in the lineup on Sunday, but it appears he's not feeling 100 percent. Rajai Davis is in left field Friday, with Yoenis Cespedes in the DH slot.

Victor Martinez is available to pinch hit Wednesday.

Advice: But the veteran designated hitter is not in the starting lineup because the Tigers are playing the Pirates at a National League park. V-Mart recently had a scare with his surgically-repaired left knee, so this stretch of rest might do him some good.
