Player Notes
Patrick Mooney of CSN Chicago reports that the Cubs are considering adding Rafael Soriano to upgrade their bullpen.

Advice: The 35-year-old right-hander is still looking for work after posting a 3.19 ERA and 59/19 K/BB ratio while saving 32 games for the Nationals in 2014. He worked with Cubs manager Joe Maddon while the two were in Tampa Bay together, and he could be a nice addition in the late innings for the Cubs, provided the two sides are able to hammer out a deal.

According to Clark Spencer of the Miami Herald, the Marlins are no longer considering adding free agent reliever Rafael Soriano.

Advice: Soriano remains jobless here in mid-May, but he apparently wasn't willing to lower his asking price to the Marlins' liking. The veteran right-hander will continue to work out on the side until a team gets desperate enough to meet his demands. Soriano posted a cool 3.19 ERA with 32 saves and a 59/19 K/BB ratio in 62 innings last season, but he did not have a good second half and he's 35 years old. It's an odd situation.

FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal reports that Rafael Soriano is "one of several options" the Marlins are considering and they are interested in him "only at a low price."

Advice: It's possible this could simply be the Marlins trying to drive Soriano's asking price down, although there's been some conflicting reports on how serious their interest is. The Marlins are ready to go with A.J. Ramos as their main guy in the ninth inning for now but seem likely to add a bullpen arm at some point, whether it's Soriano or someone else.

MLB.com's Joe Frisaro hears that the Marlins are "very much engaged" in discussions with Rafael Soriano's agent, Scott Boras.

Advice: Frisaro cautious that he's "not sure how talks will progress," but it does certainly seem as though their interest is legitimate. The Marlins will look to A.J. Ramos, Bryan Morris and Mike Dunn for the time being at closer, but Soriano does offer plenty of ninth-inning experience and remains a free agent.

Joe Frisaro of MLB.com reports that the Marlins have expressed interest in free agent reliever Rafael Soriano.

Advice: Clark Spencer of the Miami Herald confirms the report, but adds that nothing is close. It's noteworthy given Steve Cishek's struggles, but Frisaro writes that whether a deal gets done will depend on whether the Marlins believe Soriano is the right choice at closer for the price. The 35-year-old posted a 3.19 ERA, 32 saves, and a 59/19 K/BB ratio over 62 innings last season, but struggled miserably during the second half. The Marlins plan to mix and match at closer right now, with A.J. Ramos, Bryan Morris, and Mike Dunn among the likely candidates, but Frisaro speculates that Tom Koehler could also be an option once Henderson Alvarez comes off the disabled list. Stay tuned.
