Yankees turn to Nestor Cortes in rematch vs. Rays

The New York Yankees showed off their fine pitching and flexed just enough muscle to secure a series-opening victory against the Tampa Bay Rays on Friday night. The Yankees will try to win the series on Saturday afternoon when they meet the Rays in the middle contest of their three-game set in St. Petersburg, Fla. Starting pitcher Clarke Schmidt went 6 2/3 innings and combined with three relievers to shut out Tampa Bay. Schmidt, a right-hander, made his 33rd consecutive start since 2023 of allowing three runs or less, tied for the most in the majors.

They are there because Cortes and the rest of the staff have helped hold the opposition to three or fewer runs a MLB-high 23 times. And because Soto can spend most of a rainy, chilly afternoon frustratingly disputing balls

NEW YORK — In his first at-bat since Saturday’s ejection, Aaron Judge left the ballpark. Figuratively, that is. Judge’s first-inning solo home run against red-hot Tigers ace Tarik Skubal gave the Yankees an early lead in their rain-shortened 5-2 win Sunday in the Bronx, helping to finish off a three-game sweep of upstart Detroit. But the biggest blow came off the bat of Juan Soto, whose ...
