Pinch-hitter Jack Suwinski singled home Connor Joe with two outs in the ninth inning to lift the Pittsburgh Pirates to a 1-0 victory over the Colorado Rockies on Saturday. Joe led off the ninth against Nick Mears (0-3) with a single and eventually moved to third after walks to Jared Triolo and Oneil Cruz. Suwinski snapped an 0-for-12 skid by dropping a single into left as the Pirates snapped a five-game losing streak.
It's not uncommon for a team facing last place to turn to an organizational prospect to try and help them out of the hole. Let's go over the likelier case first, the Colorado Rockies. Everyone expected them to be in last place this year, because the other 4 teams set out to compete, and the Rockies...didn't. The one saving grace seemed to be Kris Bryant, and unsurprisingly he's already hurt, as is Kyle Freeland.
The Colorado Rockies placed outfielder Nolan Jones on the 10-day injured list Tuesday with a low back strain. Jones, who turns 26 on May 7, is batting just .170 with one homer, seven RBIs and 37 strikeouts in 26 games.
