Big League Stew - MLB

They say divorce hurts the children the most.

Trevor Hoffman hasn't been a kid since the mid-'80s, but the very adult business of the San Diego Padres cutting salary, which apparently is tied to the team's owner splitting with his wife, has kicked baseball's career saves leader to the curb.

Several news outlets (among them, the San Diego Union-Tribune, ESPN's Buster Olney and MLB.com) are reporting the Padres have rescinded a contract offer to Hoffman, a free agent, who has piled up all but two of his 554 saves with the Padres since 1993. (He had a couple with the Marlins.)

The Padres say they're slashing expenditures, most notably by trying to trade ace Jake Peavy, probably to the Braves or Cubs, and further scorching the Earth by pushing away Hoffman, the indisputable face of the franchise.

And, get this: The Padres informed Hoffman not in person with a one-on-one conversation, or a hand-written note, or even with a phone call

Instead, they sent his reps a fax.

Hells bells, now that's class.

General manager Kevin Towers, who is stuck in the middle, won't comment other than to confirm the Pads have yanked the 1-year, $4-million offer (plus a $4 million-club option for 2010) to Hoffman. He earned $7.5 million in 2008.

Hoffman had said he wanted to speak with owner John Moores, personally, to gauge where the organization was headed before he considered taking a pay cut.

He got his answer, albeit impersonally.

"Trevor is upset with the way they've handled the situation," one of Hoffman's agents said.

Hoffman's actually been with the club longer than Moores, who came on the scene in 1994 right after the previous ownership blew up the roster to make it more appealing, supposedly, for a new owner.

Hoffman saved 30-of-34 opportunities in 2008, when he made $7.5 million. His 3.77 ERA was his highest since 1995, though it was only 2.39 after June 1. Hoffman, who's 41, did have his lightest workload since 2003, when he had rotator cuff surgery.

He'll be somebody else's closer now.

They pulled this same crap on Tony Gwynn at the end of his career too. Trevor had an ERA under 2.00 the 2nd half of the season. Keep in mind this is the same set of geniuses that let Bruce Bochy walk away after back to back division championships, are hell bent on trading Jake Peavy in his prime, and trying to sue Khalil Greene to get salary back due to time missed because of an injury. Hey, apparently they plan on keeping Chris Young and his bad back though! If the franchise treats guys like Gwynn, Hoffman, Greene, Peavy and Bochy like this, why would ANYBODY want to come play here???

how could san diego do this to him. he is the second most important player in this franchises' history. he will be one of their only two hall of famers(Winfield doesnt count as a padre). they can pick up a 9 million dollar option on giles but not give an equally effective player half that much. the bullpen was also one of this teams biggest problems last year! at least give him a tony- like farewell tour. this is painful to watch as a padres fan. when the padres start treating their heroes the same way the chargers did with seau and harrison u know the future of this franchise is bleak.

The downfalls of slashing payroll. Truly a damn shame for Trevor. Fortunately my brewers could use another closer and put Torres back in the setup roll. He'd be coming to a contending team that would give him plenty of opportunities and would love to have a future HOF member even for only a year or two. Hella better than the Gagne experiment that went terribly terribly wrong. Trevor didn't need the juice to do it.

I have been a long time Padre fan. Through thick and thin. Back as far as the Dave Winfield days. Back when Craig Nettles threw across the diamond to Alan Wiggins. So I have seen it all. However, I am finding it hard to "Keep the Faith" when the entire organization is crumbling. Or it would appear. If the owner is having trouble financially, sell the club. Not the players. I mean do you want the Padres to win or take a potential 2-5 years to build up another team. By then who knows whats going to happen. Another Chopping? Lets get an owner here that is not afraid to pay high dollar for marque players and to stay. "Am I jumping ship?" Frustrated.........

Not a surprising move by a third-rate ballclub in a third-rate city. I'm looking foward to the Padres continuing their tradition of EPIC FAIL for several years to come.

St. Louis would LOVE to have Hoffman, and it is a player's franchise. We would love for Trevor to be a Cardinal.

I think all the die hard fans should hit the padres in the wallet and boycott the Home opener next year take the money through a big party for Trevor have everyone meet in balboa park the night or day of the opener and say thanks.

Without Torres the Brewers will welcome him with open gloves. They would not make the same mistake with him they did with Gagne.

Trevor needs to surf and lake Michigan is not great for that. I would love him on the brew crew though. The pads are a joke and the AAA team in Portland is not much better for talent.

I'm appalled at the performance of the Padres this season and the shameless actions of the front office. After being loyal to the organization for 15 years, they don't even tell him face-to-face? not even over the phone? not even to him, but a fax to his reps!? It's worse than spitting on the doorstep after kicking him to the curb.
To be honest, we all got nervous this season watching Hoffman stride out of the bullpen, especially in the first half of the season, but post-all star break, he had a 1.59 ERA!!! and finished 30/34 saves! If that's not worth even $4 million, the Padres are out of their minds.

Well it's not like the Padres really need a closer anyway. You need to be winning late in the game to use one of those.

Trevors a good guy and great clubhouse man. I have watched all but a few performances and he is loosing it and it's time for him to move on and get one more payday from a contending team. He should definatley be a coach after he retires. Happy trails.......

By the way, we in the 562 and 951 are waiting to welcome Trevor to the Dodgers. He would serve as a fine backup to Broxton.

I've tried to like the Padres but it's kind of hard to do so when they do stuff like this. I grew up watching the O'Malleys run the Dodgers with class and then FOX took that team over and ran it like the trashy T.V. station that it is. I tried to find another NL team to follow and chose the Padres but what a 2nd rate club it's turned out to be. Petco was supposed to enable them to bring in players and instead the revenue has just gone into Moores' pockets. The Mrs. is taking him to the cleaners...must be karma. For the AL, I follow the Angels.. at least that team is run well.
