Toronto's Scott Rolen(notes) owns the longest current hitting streak, 25 games, in the major leagues.

Even if Jamie McOwen stopped hitting right now, Rolen would have to keep going for three more weeks to pass him.

McOwen, a 23-year-old minor-leaguer in the Seattle Mariners organization, has at least one hit in 45 consecutive games — tying Willie Keeler of the Brooklyn Dodgers for the ninth-longest hitting streak in professional baseball history.

He did not play Thursday night, but with a hit in his next appearance, McOwen would tie Johnny Bates for the seventh-longest hitting streak in minor-league history. It's been nearly two calendar months — May 10 — since McOwen went hitless.

Joe Wilhoit, playing for Wichita in 1919, has the longest minor-league streak at 69 games. Joe DiMaggio, known for his legendary 56-game streak with the Yankees in 1941, happens to be second on the minor-league list at 61 games — done in 1933.

McOwen's streak is getting him attention. Earlier this week, after reaching 43 games, ESPN featured him (VIDEO) on its First Take show.

McOwen, in his second season at High Desert, an advanced Class-A team in the California League, is trying to not believe his own hype.

"I'm just enjoying the moment and trying not to read too much into it," McOwen says. "I don't want to talk myself out of anything.

"I try to stay out of my head, for sure."

McOwen was not considered much of a prospect based on his first two professional seasons. He never hit higher than .270, with little power, and had ugly K/BB ratios. He finished at .263/.324/.392 in '08, though he did steal 30 bases and was promoted to Class AA for the playoffs.

This season, McOwen is batting .355 with a .412 on-base percentage, .504 slugging, five homers and 53 RBIs.

And his longest hitting streak before this one? Eight, though in '08 he had five streaks of at least seven games.

What's behind his improvement?

It might have something to do with what appears a rigorous off-season training program, which surely has increased his agility and strength. The YouTubes are full of short videos, filmed by McOwen's trainer, that show him lifting sick amounts of weight and leaping great distances.

Whatever the inspiration, Bus Leagues Baseball put together a comprehensive look at his 45-game streak, which includes that kooky 33-18 game. Over the life of the streak, McOwen has hit .398 to raise his average from .270.

High Desert plays at Modesto at 10:05 p.m. ET on Friday. Listen to the game here.

Dave, brother, can we write about something that more than one person cares about? A good place to start would be the USA Eagles Rugby team and the great match they played Saturday in Charleston, SC, maybe a World Cup Qualifying match doesnt mean that much? You could gain some quality readers posting about the sport and the recent success of the US team. Just a thought, you get paid to do it!

Kevin M, Your obviously not a baseball player or interested in the sport of baseball. However, it makes me wonder why you would take the time to read this article about an amazing accomplishment by this young man, only to then turn around and tell the writer that he basically wasted his time? "...can we write about something that more than one person cares about?..." Seriously, grow up. Listen, I'm sure there are other writers out there who care about your precious rugby sport, I for one don't care for it, but why don't you just stick to the things you enjoy reading about and comment on them instead. Personally, this kid’s ability to collect base knocks in 45 consecutive games, is nothing short of amazing. Only some of baseball’s greatest players have had the ability to perform at such a level. My point being this....Don't bother posting negative comments about something if you don't care about it. In fact, why bother reading about it. Common sense dude. If it wasn't for Mr. Dave here, I would have never known about this kid’s current streak. I for one, will be sure to tune into the game tonight wishing this kid the best of luck at each AB. Have a great day, Kev.
    Thanks again Dave.

The funny thing is that i played baseball my entire life, played baseball and football in college and have coached baseball and football. Your issues are that you dont understand Rugby or have the balls to setp out on a pitch with me. BTW, I hit .423 with 16 home runs in my senior season and was an all region selection. When any of you get to my level please let me know, and if any of you feel the urge to step out on the pitch with me I would love to show you why I care more about Rugby than I do a hitting streak in "A" baseball. I mean really??? Those pitchers are still throwing in the low to mid 80's, high school pitchers do that, and he should hit every game!

I'm sure you did there Kevin, I'm sure you did. Anyone can sit in front of their computer and blog about how great they are in comparison to everyone else out there. In reality, I doubt anyone else out there believes you and your ,423 BA. Maybe you did, good for you. No one wrote an article about you, so maybe you’re feeling a little jealous? And seriously - "When any of you get to my level please let me know, and if any of you feel the urge to step out on the pitch with me I would love to show you why I care more about Rugby than I do a hitting streak in "A" baseball." There you go Kev, challenge the world to face you, big guy. Whatever man. I don't even know why I'm wasting my time blogging back at you. Maybe I'm just amused at your lack of intelligence and/or common sense. Just stay off this blog, go outside, put your leather helmet on, grab your pigskin and go aimlessly run into things. Have a great night, Sir.
