Big League Stew - MLB

For having played 20 seasons during a baseball era filled with controversy over steroids and escalating salaries, Ken Griffey Jr. has kept his reputation remarkably clean. Off the top of my head, I can't think of one situation where Griffey drew a lot of fire for something he did or said, unless it was some codger like Buck Showalter complaining about how Griffey used to wear his hat backwards in batting practice. (I also seem to remember Griffey being mad at ESPN for something, but the exact details are not ringing a bell and Internet searchin' is proving fruitless.)

Anyway, there apparently is a first time for everything because Griffey is sure to draw plenty of fire for his actions on Saturday night, when he puzzled fans by making a throat slash gesture after he hit his 607th career homer and crossed home plate.

Initial speculation was that Griffey was making the gesture toward someone in the stands, but legendary beat writer Hal McCoy later clarified that it was meant for Reds announcer Jeff Brantley.

From the Dayton Daily News:

Griffey is angry over different comments Brantley made and said one of them was, "He said I'm pouting because the Reds haven't picked up my option ($16 million) for next year. If I was that concerned about money I wouldn't have come here in the first place."

Brantley said he never said that and the subject wasn't broached until Brantley and Griffey sat down in the players dining room early Sunday, "And I think he's upset that I said something about the defense of the corner outfielders (Adam Dunn, Griffey)," said Brantley.

As much as Brantley might be baseball's leading purveyor of hot air, that still doesn't excuse Griffey making an on-field motion even more distasteful than Brantley's mullet. Considering that both Griffey and Brantley are theoretically on the same team, it'll be interesting to see how this one plays out. Pretending to slash someone's throat isn't something that's just easily explained away.

UPDATE: Awful Announcing has the video, though it's a little hard to make out.

Being a reds fan all my life, I am really proud to see Griffey step-up and cover himself on stupid remarks made by the sportscasters.
It is pretty funny how they are suppose to be co-workers working for the reds organization yet Brantley and Marty Brennnaman both dog the team day and night.
If it wasn’t for Griffey they wouldn’t even be able to pull in the 30,000 fans they got now.
As much as I hate thinking about Griffey leaving the reds organization, I feel he will be MUCH happier on a different team.
    Go Griffey!

Also wanted to add that Brantley is a horrible sportscaster on WLW 700, he is so monotone when he does play by play.
I think my 8 year old cousin could be a little bit more excited about calling a play.

Don't forget the time Griffey homered vs Detroit, and as he headed for home he grabbed his crotch while looking at Sparky Anderson - presumable in response to being intentionally walked earlier in the game

Brantley is such a moron... He deserves whatever gestures fly his way. Griffey is a class act and this only improves his image in my mind.

I'm sorry you can't take honesty from your broadcasters, but some of us who watch games don't need the broadcasters to hard-sell the company line. Brennaman is honest, and I'll take that over a guy who sugar-coats failure. On the other hand, Brantley is just a blow-hard.

Man, who cares? With Griffey there in nine seasons, the Reds haven't done squat. In fact, he's hurt the organization with his myriad of injuries while drawing a salary that hurts the team's ability to add other players around him. You could argue they would have been better off without him.

Griffey signed a below market deal at about $12 million per season when he left the Mariners. Granted, he's lost time due to injury, but in general he's one of the cleaner acts in the game. Brantley's got the IQ of a mule (and that's being generous). How else do you explain ESPN letting him go and replacing him with another idiot in Showalter (who couldn't win with a good Yankees roster, and really got lucky the year he won a title in Arizona b/c he couldn't do squat with the Rangers if he's such a "great" baseball mind).
Griffey's entitled one slip up given his body of work. Brantley should cut his hair - it would allow more oxygen to get to his brain...

Man both Griffey and Brantley are worthless. How many teams have a 40 year old with 8 homers batting third? And Brantley has to be the lamest color man in the majors! The Reds are pathetic. Time to dump this big salary has-been and let the younger guys play!

Brantley was right about Griff's poor defense that night. If anyone saw the game, they know that. Brantley is great for Cincinnati. Griff will be gone in a year.

Now, you're looking for the SLIGHTEST thing to criticize Griffey for, seeing as he's been clean his whole career. Obviously, it isn't getting the attention you felt it would because this happened Saturday. It's Monday and nothing. He's been clean. He's hit 607 home runs. He's a first-ballot hall of famer. As fas as I'm concerned, he can do anything he wants. He's the only clean one left.

Griffey needs a return trip to the AL to rejuvenate his career. He put his time in the outfield and went hard everyday. What does he have to show for it? Years of nagging injuries. Ken, go back to the AL, DH and get to 700!! It can be done, your bat is still as sweet as ever, use it as a DH and add a few years back on to your career that you lost giving 110% effort in the field.

And to Andrew S: Buck Showalter was not the manager of the D-Backs when they won in 2001. Bob Brenly was. Showalter was let go after the previous season for taking the D-Backs from being a playoff team in '99 to having a losing record. This was reminiscent of his being let go by the Yankees after the '95 season. They went on to hire Joe Torre as manager and would reach the playoffs in each of his 12 seasons as skipper, winning championships in four out five seasons ('96, '98-'00). In my opinion, he's a good manager to build a team with, but he hasn't won the big one yet.

Oh who cares. Griffey has earned the right to do whatever he wants. He should be fourth on the HR list behind Aaron Ruth and Mays. No Bonds, No Sosa. And 660 isn't out of the question to become third all time. Brantley is a joke anyways.

Who cares about a feud between a player and an announcer? It's not going to stop either of them from doing their jobs, so what difference does it make who said or did what?

Wow, so far, none of you posting have any clue as to what you are talking about. First off, Griffey has 14 home runs, not 8 as Chuck would have you believe. And sorry, but what Brantley said, leaving out whatever perception you may have of him, was that the Reds corner outfielders are really weak defensively, which they are if you ever watch the Reds. In that paticular game Griffey had two very catchable balls drop right in front of him. As someone who watches the Reds play almost everyday I can tell you, Griffey is ONE of the problems with this team. He has turned into a me-me-me loafer. He doesnt run down balls in the outfield, he does nothing other than try to pad his homerun total. They play the ultra shift on him all the time and he never just pokes a ball down the third baseline for the easiest single. If any of you were true Reds fans, then you'd know that what Brantley said is dead on. Even if Brantley is a tard. The Reds will be wayyyy better off without him.

Griffey was a phenomenal player. Can it really be that he's hit over .300 once in 11 yrs., has no 100 RBI seasons the past 8 yrs. & has hit more than 30 homers only once those same past 8 yrs.? Maybe he should cut his own throat - figuratively speaking of course.
