Report: Drew Brees is ‘livid’ about the franchise tag

Drew Brees with his tongue outDrew Brees was hit with the franchise tag by the New Orleans Saints on Saturday, despite having made it clear that that's not what he wanted. So what happens now? Well, according to CBSSports.com's Rapid Reports, Brees gets really mad.

Drew Brees is "livid" about being franchise tagged and not receiving a long-term contract, according to WIST-AM in New Orleans. The radio station cites sources in the Brees camp that he will not sign the franchise tag deal. Brees and the Saints have until July 15 to hammer out a long-term deal.

    My two immediate reactions:

    1) Of course he's livid.

    2) He'll get over it.

The franchise tag means that Brees will remain a Saint for one year at a pre-determined salary number. In bad news for Brees, the number is calculated differently now than it has been in years past. Last year, a quarterback with the franchise tag made the average of the top five highest-paid players at his position -- in 2011, it was over $16 million. This year, with the new calculations, it's $14.4 million.

I do believe that it's a ridiculous thing for the Saints to do, and I don't understand why they're antagonizing Drew Brees, who is pretty much the franchise savior. But it's also way too early to accuse the Saints of having made any kind of major mistake, either. Only about a million times in NFL history has a player said he was offended by a contract offer and then gone on to sign a long-term deal with the same team that insulted him so harshly.

[ Related: Silver: Expect NFL to come down hard on Saints for bounties ]

The Saints still have until July 15 to make that happen. That's plenty of time for wounds to heal, people to calm down and to get a deal worked out.

I just can't picture the Saints ‒ even with as poorly as they've handled this so far ‒ doing something as insane as letting Brees go. There are currently, what, two other guys that can do for a team what Brees can do for a team? He is, by any definition of the word, elite. He can make a bad team a good team. Guys like that should, and usually do, get the gigantic paychecks.

But let's not ignore pessimism completely. If Brees wants, he can refuse to sign the franchise tag offer, and hold out. Maybe the Saints never wake up, and maybe that happens, and they get a taste of life with Chase Daniel as the starting quarterback. (Note to Saints fans: If you enjoyed 1984 through 2005, you'll love Chase Daniel.) Or maybe no long-term deal can be worked out, and Brees plays one season under the franchise tag and then walks.

So things aren't great at the moment, but it's a little early to declare this a disaster, either. I just have a hard time believing that the Saints would screw up a decision that seems like it should be so easy.

    Gracias, Big Lead Sports.

Way to not guarantee your best player money. Sure he's getting a huge one year contract, but Brees wants security. Its going to cost the Saints more money next year to sign him now.

if brees does not already have SECURITY he is one dumb asz

Wow, do any of you guys pay attention to the NFL and how these deals sometimes get done? The Saints are buying time to negotiate his deal. They're not total idiots about the business. They understand who fills that arena every year - it's Brees! They're not sticking him with a one-year deal and telling him "see ya next year." The Ravens did the same thing with Ray Rice - AS IF they're not going to lock him down long-term?

What are the Saints thinking? Who won the super bowl for them? Who gets involved with the city, gives back and promotoes the city where ever he goes? Drew Brees!!!!!! Pay him his money!!! Someone must have fell out of a tree and cracked their skull, I just can't believe this. New Orleans, don't let us down and especially Drew Brees! He has a right to be mad!!!!
      • Runee 2 months ago
Oh I'm pretty sure people here in New Orleans would run Benson & Loomis out of town if this ends up pushing Brees away.
      • Valerian 2 months ago
Last I checked it was the TEAM that won the superbowl.

I don't think some of you understand the franchise tag and why NFL players don't like it. Signing a long-term contract gives the player a nice signing bonus that they will get paid guaranteed. Signing the franchise tag gives you a great salary, but only for one year and it is NOT guaranteed. If a player gets injured while on the franchise tag, that lowers their value considerably and they probably won't get the kind of contract they would have got if they signed a long-term deal the year before. This has happened to Drew Brees (he got injured his last year in San Diego while playing under the franchise tage and though he was handsomely rewarded by the Saints, he would have made more money and had more offers if he didn't suffer an injury). I'm no fan of players holding out but if I was a player I'd probably be "livid" if I was given the franchise tag. Let's not forget that the NFL is becoming more and more a young mans game and veterans want to get that long-term contract as soon as they are able to. The more years you play under the franchise tag, the more it will hurt not only your next contract but will most likely have a bigger effect on the contract you sign after that one. The difference between a 33 year old QB and a 35 year old QB is a lot bigger than most people realize. It gets even worse in the case of RB. A 26 year old RB might get a nice 3 or 4 year deal while a 28 year old RB might get 3 years if he's lucky or hasn't had a lot of carries (most RB tend to decline around 28-30).

        Well said.

Bingo. Unlike baseball, NFL contracts are just as much a reward for past performance as it is for the future as the money's not guaranteed. If your star player outperformed his last contract it's expected that you repay him with a good chunk of guaranteed money or he'll walk. Don't know why the Saints would be doing this to their best player. Brees has good reason to be #$%$

Excellent summary of the situation, I see why the franchise tag is so feared now.

I'm confused, if an illegal hit cost $25,000 seems like a whole lot more than what is in the pot for a bounty. Legal hits don't count, i mean you can put a person out with a legal hit and not get fined, thats the object of the game. Bounty? sounds like the media over reacting as usual.

Bring Back my old time Saints hero Archie Manning---he would sign the contrat for less because HE truly cares about New Orleans. Brees sold us on the idea of his love for New Orleans and keeping the team together and more winning and loads of good will... now he threatens to HOLD OUT???????????? what the hell is going on here... Our team is collapsing before our eyes and no one is DOING ANYTHING ABOUT IT!!!!!!!
Come on Drew---- DO THE RIGHT THING and make the deal for a little less PROVE that you do care about the city and the team.... HOLD OUT??? say it aint so Drew!!!!!!

The hits just keep on coming for the Saints (No pun intended). With "Bountygate" looming over their head, I see nothing but bad things in their future.
