Michael Sam's NFL journey suffers another setback, hamstring injury at pro day

Shutdown Corner

NFL draft prospect Michael Sam suffered another major setback in front of league scouts.

Sam was one of the participants at the University of Missouri’s pro day on Thursday. It was his chance to make up for a dismissal showing at the NFL scouting combine. Sam was on his home field. He knew exactly what drills were coming. Sam was so focused on succeeding, he did not want to speak with the media after his workout.

According to several reports, Sam injured his hamstring after running the 40-yard dash in 4.72 seconds (unofficially) on Thursday.

He previously ran an unimpressive time of 4.91 seconds in the 40-yard dash at the combine.

Prior to the hamstring injury, Sam participated in the bench press. He finished with 19 reps of 225 pounds. It was a slight improvement from the 17 he completed at the combine.

Sam’s lackluster performance at the combine confirmed what many NFL observers believed, which is he will likely be a mid-to-late-round selection in May's draft. Despite being co-defensive player of the year in the SEC last season, Sam will be forced to make an NFL roster as a special teams player.

Teams will scrutinize how Sam handles these setbacks. If Sam shows he can bounce back after failing, there might be a coach or general manager who is enticed by his character. The Eagles' Chip Kelly was the only head coach in attendance on Thursday, according to NFL Network's Albert Breer.

Sam apparently tried to continue participating in his pro day despite the noticeable hamstring injury, which is a plus for him.

Sam’s sexual orientation is well-documented, but the results of his performances during two NFL workouts have been unimpressive.

However, Sam has a chance to redeem himself if invited to participate in private team workouts.
