Stephen Curry Wins NBA MVP Award After Record-Setting Season for Golden State Warriors

First unanimous MVP in league history

Golden State Warriors point guard Stephen Curry was named the National Basketball Association’s Most Valuable Player on Tuesday, taking the award for the second consecutive year following a record-setting season.

Curry is the first player to win the MVP by a unanimous vote in league history, the NBA said Tuesday. He led the Warriors to a 73-9 regular season finish during the 2015-2016, edging out the 1995-1996 Chicago Bulls for the best record in NBA history. And he made 403 three-pointers during the regular season, obliterating the record of 286 he set just one season earlier.

President Obama recently called Curry, a TIME 100 honoree, the “greatest shooter I’ve ever seen.”

Curry has missed part of this year’s playoffs because of a knee injury. But he returned Monday night for game 4 of the team’s second-round series against the Portland Trail Blazers, leading the Warriors to a 132-125 win in overtime. Curry had 40 points in that game, including an NBA-record 17 points in overtime.
