When DJ Stewart hit a 388-foot home run to put the Mets ahead of the Cubs 4-1 in the bottom of the sixth inning on Tuesday, he made sure to look over at Mets manager Carlos Mendoza and smile. It's sort of an inside joke the two men share, dating back to the beginning of the season when Stewart, the last player to make the team out of spring training, felt “stressed out” about his future after the Mets signed J.D. Martinez. Mendoza, who described Stewart as having “a cloud on top of him” at the time, would remind him to “smile.”
Harrison Bader came up in the clutch again, ripping a go-ahead two-run double to lift the Mets to a 6-3 win over the Pirates on Monday at Citi Field.
DJ Stewart hit a two-run homer in the eighth inning to give New York the lead, Brandon Nimmo drove in five runs with four hits, including two homers, and the Mets held on to beat the Atlanta Braves 8-7 on Monday night. The Mets, who have won four of five, snapped Atlanta's three-game winning streak on the night Atlanta celebrated the 50-year anniversary of Hank Aaron's record-breaking 715th homer. Nimmo began the night hitting .103 with no homers.
