Rose Zhang is threatening to run away with the Cognizant Founders Cup and end Nelly Korda's bid for a record sixth straight win on the LPGA Tour. The 20-year-old Zhang followed a tournament record-tying opening round of 63 with a morning-best 4-under 68 Friday and moved to 13-under 131 halfway through the event at the Upper Montclair Country Club. Korda shot a 69 Thursday, which meant she started her second round 10 shots behind Zhang, who has not won since capturing the Mizuho Americas Open in her professional debut a year ago.
Justin Thomas was back home in Kentucky for an occasion different from any other time in Louisville. The city honored him with its “Hometown Hero” award, and a 60-foot banner was unfurled from the building he used to pass on the way to Saint Xavier High School. Thomas was so choked up at the presentation he couldn't speak until he eventually said, “The things I've felt today, I've never felt in any golf tournament I've won.”
Zhang has one bogey over her first 36 holes at Upper Montclair Country Club.
Among the Dye Preserve members in the PGA Championship are Taylor Pendrith, Alex Noren and Grayson Murray.
