The San Francisco Giants acquired left-handed reliever Williams Jerez from the Los Angeles Angels in exchange for right-handed starter Chris Stratton, the Giants announced late Monday evening.

Jerez, who turns 27 in May, made his big league debut with the Angels last season, posting a 6.00 ERA in 15 innings across 17 appearances, striking out 15 batters. In 7 1/3 innings during spring training, he allowed two runs (2.45 ERA) on seven hits and six walks with six strikeouts.

The Dominican Republic native was a second-round pick out of a New York high school by the Boston Red Sox in 2011.

Stratton, 28, went 10-10 with a 5.09 ERA in 28 games (26 starts) for the Giants last season, striking out 112 in 145 innings. He has a career 4.63 ERA in parts of three seasons in the majors, and he went 1-2 with a 4.60 ERA in six games (five starts) this spring.

Stratton was drafted 20th overall by the Giants in 2012 out of Mississippi State.

The Giants also optioned left-hander Andrew Suarez to the minors. The 26-year-old went 7-13 with a 4.49 ERA in 29 starts last season. He struggled this spring, producing a 6.06 ERA while allowing 21 hits in 16 1/3 innings.
