Flyers send former Union hockey standout Gostisbehere to Coyotes

Jul. 22—The Shayne Gostisbehere era in Philadelphia is over.

On Thursday, the Flyers traded the 28-year-old defenseman and former Union College men's hockey standout to the Arizona Coyotes, along with second- and seventh-round picks in the 2022 NHL draft, for future considerations.

Gostisbehere, who led Union to the 2014 NCAA hockey title, was selected by the Flyers in the third round of the 2012 NHL Draft. He signed with the Flyers days after winning the NCAA title.

Gostisbehere's first professional season in 2014-15 was cut short when he suffered a torn ACL while playing for the Lehigh Valley Phantoms, the Flyers' AHL affiliate. He was called up early in the 2015-16 season, and had an outstanding rookie campaign, collecting 17 goals and 29 assists in 64 games. He finished second in voting for the Calder Trophy, which goes to the league's rookie of the year.

But injuries and inconsistent play hindered the remainder of Gostisbehere's time in Philadelphia. His best season came in 2017-18, when he had 13 goals and 52 assists in 78 games. But that was sandwiched around years when he had fewer than 40 points.

This past season, Gostisbehere had nine goals and 11 assists in 40 games.

The Flyers left Gostisbehere unprotected for Wednesday's Seattle Kraken expansion draft. The Kraken passed on Gostisbehere.
