Controversial Rio Grande Buoy Barrier Dubbed 'Inhumane' by Democrats Visiting Border

A member of Congress called Texas Gov Greg Abbott’s border control tactics “cruel and inhumane” after a visit to Eagle Pass on August 8 with the Congressional Hispanic Caucus.
US Rep Sylvia Garcia said she was “appalled” by the situation, and called buoys being used to form a barrier in the Rio Grande a “danger”.
She posted video showing a section of buoys on land, focusing in on the serrated metal discs that separate them.
The Texas governor’s office has described the state’s multi-agency border operation, Operation Lone Star, as filling in “the dangerous gaps created by the Biden Administration’s refusal to secure the border.”
Democrat Joaquin Castro, another of the caucus delegation at Eagle Pass, also criticized what he called the “barrel traps” being placed in the Rio Grande. “The state government and Greg Abbott are treating human beings like animals,” said Castro, who also called the barrier “inhumane”.
Two dead bodies were recovered near the buoy barrier in early August, with Abbott saying the buoys “used by Texas did not cause the drowning[s]”.
