Chesapeake teacher killed in motorcycle crash in Virginia Beach

A Chesapeake Public Schools teacher was killed Saturday morning in a motorcycle crash in Pungo.

Virginia Beach police responded to the crash, located in the 3600 block of Charity Neck Road, at 11:32 a.m.

Police said Dennis Whitby, 41, of Virginia Beach, was riding a motorcycle on the road when he collided head-on with an SUV. Whitby was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the SUV stayed at the scene and contacted authorities, police said.

Whitby was a physical education teacher at Greenbrier Middle School, according to a school division spokesperson. Counselors will be available to students and staff for “the next few school days,” Greenbrier Middle principal Michael Mustain said in a Sunday message to school families.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with Mr. Whitby’s family during this difficult time and we offer condolences to all the Greenbrier Middle School students and staff members as we mourn this loss together,” Mustain said.

An investigation into the crash is ongoing.
