Array of information shared at meeting of Sturgis Public Schools board

An array of information was shared Monday at a meeting of the Sturgis Public Schools Board of Education held at Sturgis High School.

Several projects at Sturgis High School were showcased by staff and students.

Among them, Mari Campbell presented the school’s four exchange students this year. Each told a bit about themselves, either in person or through a slide show.

Carie Arseneau and students presented on Sturgis High School’s social justice club. With 40 active members, the club has taken on projects including a Martin Luther King Jr. Day celebration and decorating classroom doors for Black History Month. They plan to create learning videos, participate in the parade with a float, put on dances, and do community storytelling projects.

Stephen Erts, high school art teacher, discussed his photography classes. Student Eathan Klar shared a photography video he created about the uncertainty of graduation.

Jeff Wanamaker, manufacturing technology teacher, shared information about his class. It’s one of three machine shops left in the state that are located inside high schools, he said.

Brooke Moses, career preparation coordinator, talked about senior projects. Instead of doing a senior portfolio presentation, seniors will now do mock interviews, she said.

Lastly, Eliot Gitelman, orchestra director, talked about about Kim Duran and some of her accolades. She performed a piece for those in attendance.

During the board comments portion of the meeting, member Lynn Brand thanked SHS for showing everyone “the reasons Sturgis High School is such a great place for kids.”

“I taught beside a lot of these people and watched and appreciated the opportunities that our students have here,” she said. “Really, we have so many more opportunities than a lot of school systems our size. I’m not sure why that is, but I’m always so grateful that it is.”

Also showcased Monday were art and music curriculum resources. Art and music teachers from around the district presented their needs, including furniture, books, kilns, instruments and instrument repair.

Additional news from the meeting:

  • "Trojan Heroes" for April were honored. They are Matthew Henningsen (high school teacher), Alicia Wilber (Wall teacher), and Chelsea Wilber (middle school teacher).

  • The board approved NEOLA policy updates. One dealt with staff dress and grooming for administrators and three involved grants, said superintendent Art Ebert.

  • Assistant superintendent Nicole Gittinger gave a presentation regarding the continuous improvement process.

At its next meeting May 9, the board will consider a bus purchase for the 2022-23 school year and their summer meeting schedule.

Kim Duran performed Monday for those in attendance at a meeting of the SPS board. It was part of a showcase of some of the special things happening at Sturgis High School.
