Fourth-Place Medal, a Yahoo! Sports blog covering the Summer Olympics in Beijing

Updated: 4:43 p.m. EDT

Spain's Olympic basketball team posed for an advertisement prior to the Games which appears to show all its players slanting their eyes, a move that could offend its Olympic hosts in Beijing. The ads, for a Spanish courier company, appeared in the Spanish-language newspaper La Marca.

As the uproar over the picture has grown today, more information about the advertising shot has come to light. The ad was sponsored by a Spanish courier company, Seur. Spain's team, ironically, also is sponsored by Li-Ning Footwear, a Chinese company founded by Li Ning, the final torchbearer who was hoisted along the top of Beijing National Stadium during the Olympic Opening Ceremony finale.

The Spanish-language paper El Mundo has a piece debating whether the ad was racist that basically calls out the British press for trying to smear Spain's good name. But they miss the point. Whether the picture was made in good fun is irrelevant. It was a ridiculous idea that was bound to upset a lot of people.

It's baffling that nobody involved in the picture -- from the photographers to the players -- even seemed to consider that this ad would be looked at negatively. Did it not occur to somebody that it might not be a good idea to mock a large portion of the continent before the world's largest athletic competition that, by the way, happens to take place on that continent. Were they not aware of an invention called "the Internet" that allows pictures taken in Spain to be transmitted all over the world for the eyes of everyone?

And now that the inevitable controversy has hit, they're still defending themselves when a simple, "the ad was in poor taste, we apologize" would have sufficed. This story would be slowing down if the Spanish Basketball team had apologized immediately. Now it's just picking up steam.

The Organization of Chinese-Americans has released multiple statements condemning the picture. George Wu, deputy director of the group, said, "it is unfortunate that this type of imagery would rear its head during something that is supposed to be a time of world unity." Response in Beijing has been muted so far.

Madrid is thought to be one of the frontrunners to land the 2016 Summer Games (the site will be announced next year). Could this controversy hurt Spain's chances of landing another Olympics?

Interestingly, the Spanish basketball team took on China tonight, winning 85-75 in overtime. No word on whether Pau Gasol was on the receiving end of any elbows from Yao Ming. The Chinese crowd did have a message for the Spaniards though, booing vigorously during the game.

There is a time and a place for everything... this was not the correct time OR the place for something like this... If Chris Rock had done it on stage in my home town of Tulsa one night, everyone would laugh, but this is just plain stupid...

As a Chinese I think the ad shows how dumb everybody who played a part in the ad really really is.Chinese around the world should nickname the whole Spanish basketball team "Dumb Arseholes" and jeers them everytime they take to the courts

Weak line about how "anybody with a shred of intelligence" is offended. Some intelligent people don't get so easily offended. It's a stupid move on the part of everybody involved with the picture and they deserve any flack they get over it, but stupidity isn't always offensive. Sometimes it's just stupid.

If that were true, that stupidity isn't always offensive, this country would have FAR less racial issues... stupidity is, in many instances quite offensive...probably because the people who are offended are just as stupid! either way, the picture is totally uncalled for... that, i think everyone can agree on.

#8, Timmmay, I guess it would have been ok if the Spainish team had painted their faces 'black' to mimick the Americans. People are not being uptight when they said this picture is offensive, they are being decent. A quality lost in this day and age.

Rude and with no respect for other cultures. Spain has been always about themselves. They are a conceited country.

Get over yourselves! It was funny. Possibly not in the best of taste, but funny. Stupid Spanish? Well, at least the Spanish are not stupid enough to live under a communist regime that tries to eliminate the very concept of being an individual.

Hey timmay.........."Then the idiots who leave comments like "They're from Spain......................nuff said" are so hypocritical its ridiculous."
You can apologize all you like for the neo-facsist Spaniards. A culture that once embraced Franco, pursecuted Jews, Muslims, gypsies and the Basques, and worked tirelessly to exterminate my people don't rate quite as high in my book as yours. My ancestors still call from their millions of graves calling for an accounting from the lords of Iberia. Hypocritical..........what the hell are you talking about?

They might as well walk around Beijing and call them "chinitos" while slanting their eyes at the locals. Why not stop by Japan and call them Japs while at it? Do stop by Africa for a photo op with black paint faces and spears. I had no idea Spain was such a backward country. These idiots still haven't gotten out of the 18th century.

Disgusting. This is offensive and racist. Mocking people based on physical appearances is not in the spirit of the Olympics. They should apologize.

This is the same country where soccer fans make monkey noises and throw bananas at black players, so I'm not surprised how clueless they are in respect to race. It's also so typically Spanish not to apologize, but to attempt to shift blame to the English, French, Chinese etc etc. C'mon, Espana, join the the 21st Century! It's fun!
