The Philadelphia Flyers snagged soon-to-be unrestricted free agent defenseman Dan Hamhuis(notes) via trade this weekend to help build up what could be the best defense in the NHL if it can improve at goaltending.
CSNPhilly.com reports that the team is looking to make a trade before or during the draft to improve that position. The team will begin negotiations with Hamhuis today in hopes of finishing off a deal by the draft, which starts on June 24th, according to the site.
"Obviously, our intention is to get him signed prior to [July 1] and that is what our aim is at this point in time," Flyers GM Paul Holmgren told the site. "The sooner that we get going on trying to get this done, the better."
Hamhuis scored five goals and mad 19 assists last season while making $2 million. He will be looking for more than that in his new deal.
