The Grand Rapids Griffins are getting ready for playoff hockey and they have some extra experience to help.
The Detroit Red Wings were pleased by how young defenseman Simon Edvinsson handled playing in pressure-packed games during a playoff run that fell just short. The 6-6 former No. 6 pick will get an opportunity to play more important games with the Grand Rapids Griffins in the AHL playoffs after being reassigned on Wednesday, along with veteran forward Zach Aston-Reese. Edvinsson, 21, appeared in 14 games after being recalled on March 19. “His play has been a huge bright spot in this stretch,” coach Derek Lalonde said on Monday.
Dylan Larkin scored on a power play 41 seconds into overtime and the Detroit Red Wings overcame Auston Matthews' 69th goal of the season to beat the Toronto Maple Leafs 5-4 on Saturday night. Alex DeBrincat scored twice, David Perron had a goal and an assist, Simon Edvinsson also scored and J.T. Compher had two assists for Detroit, which led 4-1 after one period.
