Porter on Vick: 'All it was was dogs'

Miami Dolphins linebacker Joey Porter commented on the possible reinstatement of former Atlanta Falcons quarterback Michael Vick and, as usual, Porter shot right from the lip, according to a report on EPSN.com. Vick was convicted for his role in a dogfighting ring and is serving time in a Kansas federal prison. He's scheduled to be released next summer.

"He's already been punished enough," said Porter (referring to Vick's possible reinstatement after serving his sentence), who owns a pair of pit bulls and a Maltese. "They gave him his penalty. He paid his penalty. What else should they do to him now?

"All it was was dogs. They act like they don't even like pit bulls anyway. That's the funny thing about it if you want to get back on that topic. I got pit bulls, I got to put them under a different breed just to travel. So you can't even fly pit bulls nowhere.

"It's a breed they don't care about. It's not like he was fighting cocker spaniels or something that they like. They don't really care too much about pit bulls."

Profootballtalk.com reported that Porter let his pitbull loose and it killed a miniature horse.

Porter buddy I am not sure it was the breed that makes the difference...the "sport" is cruel and inhumane to animals who do not have the choice not to participate if they don't want to.
I saw a tape once and it was grotesque...a shame helpless animals are used to kill each other for sport but I do believe that once a person serves his time, he deserves to move on with his life...

As a Falcons fan, I agree with what Porter is saying, only on the standpoint that Vick has paid his price. If Pacman can repeatedly get suspended for his actions, Vick , at least ,deserves a SECOND chance.

I hate to say it but Porter sort of has a point. If a cop sees a pit bull wondering the streets, they shoot them. No questions asked. But if a cop sees a poodle wondering the streets they would call the pound and try to find the owner. A pit bull gets a bullet. Then they get some leave because they fired their weapon. I still think dog fighting is wrong, but they are dogs that no one cares about. Larry Johnson goes on a woman beating tour, he is playing a few weeks later.

Don't care about the breed? is this guy serious? IS not about the breed, its about the CRUELTY Vick inflicted on these poor animals! Bottom line is Vick made stupid decisions and had plenty of time and money to correct not only his behavior but also his decision making skills. What franchise would want to gamble on that? plus he hasn't played in over 2 years!

Killed a miniature horse, cute. Vick has not served his time, they should have sentenced to dog years. To think I used to like Porter, what a piece of work he is.

Stupid. Ignorant. Those two words immediately come to mind when I read Porter's and his defenders comments. All of you are indicative of what is wrong with wrong people. You can't or don't want to accept that you are without values. May all of you reap what you sow.

Steve G, Porter has a point only in that the breed is held in different regards. It doesn't make it any more legal or acceptable because they were pit bulls fighting.
Vick didn't get sentenced just for fighting dogs. He got sentenced and punished for running a dog fighting circuit. There's a big difference. The kingpin of the mafia is going to do more time than the henchman who carries out the dirty work. Not to mention, Vick went on record and lied that he knew nothing about the dogfighting.
I wish players, actors, and celebrities would just focus on excelling at their work and stop with the philosophy. People like Porter only wind up sounding dumber than was first thought.

VIck will return to society and the NFL should reinstate him. At worse, this was a moral crime that led to him getiing locked up. The NFL was and is full of misfits who are asked to hold it together. Some do and some don't. I think VIck got full of himself and did some cruel and foolish stuff.
As far as Porter's comment, they don't matter. Let VIck earn a living, he will appreciate it now. He will will not be a QB again, but he will be a a hell of a threat and money maker for some team. I'm a JETS fan and I would love to see him on special teams and as a WR or DB!

the sport is cruel, but vick has been punished enough. abusing dogs is wrong but he did not kill anyone and basically his whole life has been taken away. it almost seems like they are just trying to pile on now. bring him down.

I suppose the crux of his issue is race related. If this was a white dog murderer he'd have never gone to jail.
I think he got the appropriate time in prison. Enough of this 'a rapist gets less time' or 'a wife beater gets less time'. I think we can all agree that those people should be locked up for longer. It doesn't make this crime any less despicable. The jail time for those other crimes should be more severe. But he definitely should be allowed to play immediately after his release. i'd say 20 months in prison and losing all his money is enough of a punishment.
