Ratings in the NFL, while still stronger than any other challenger on the television landscape, continue to decline, and a new survey by Yahoo Sports and YouGov discerns several reasons why. In a survey of 1,136 Americans who identified themselves as NFL fans, 29 percent said they are watching fewer NFL games. Worth noting: the 40 percent of the “watching less NFL” group claiming protests as the reason represents 12 percent of all NFL fans.
The Dallas Cowboys are kicking the Tony Romo decision down the road another week. The Cowboys are on a bye this week, and rookie Dak Prescott will start the first game after the bye against the Philadelphia Eagles, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport. Romo might not be ready for the game after that, either, Rapoport reported.
Colleague Frank Schwab did a thorough job breaking down why the San Francisco 49ers are the worst team in the NFL right now, and could remain at or near the bottom of the league for a while. From subpar drafts to an avoidance (refusal?) to sign big-money free agents to his force-out of coach Jim Harbaugh after the 2014 season, general manager Trent Baalke has made a mess of the Niners. As Schwab notes, Baalke and the team did have to deal with an almost unprecedented offseason in 2015, as a litany of key players decided to retire.
