The Diamondbacks have an $8.5 million option on pitcher Brandon Webb(notes) and the word is that the team doesn't want to pay him that kind of salary next year so it may buy him out for $2 million, according to the Arizona Republic, and try to negotiate something better.
The team supposedly wants Webb back. He's not promising anything, though, if the team buys him out of his contract. He is not interested in a restructured deal. Webb noted to the East Valley Tribune that the older John Smoltz(notes) has $5.5 million coming to him from the St. Louis Cardinals next year and Webb feels like he is at least worth that.
There is a feeling in Arizona that when push comes to shove, the team will pick up the option but that there will be lots of talk about not picking it up before then.

The Red Sox are paying $9 million next year for Julio Lugo. Isn't that enough?

You don't have to thank us. Julio Lugo is about the worst fielding shortstop I have ever seen and Smoltz was batting practice. On your last point, I would also like to see the Red Sox play the Cardinals in the WS, But of course, I would like to see the Red Sox play anybody in the WS.

Interesting, Mr. Webb being from the Cincinnati area, I am sure the Reds would pay 5.5mil for his services, only bad thing is coming to Cincinnati may ruin his career, not just because of the team, but with Dusty "I kill Pitchers" Baker as the manager, I wouldn't sign with em.

I think that the only team that can knock off the Cardinals in the playoffs could be whatever team wins the AL Central. The Tigers want revenge from 06, and the Twins can get hot just in time for the playoffs. Look at the Angels last year, they smoked teams in the regular season, but were on fumes come October. It's not about who had the best season, but who had a good enough one for the playoffs and can get hot in October.
