Player Notes
Aroldis Chapman worked a perfect 1 1/3 innings Thursday, closing out the Cubs' 3-1 win over the White Sox.

Advice: The four-out save was also the first save in Chapman's Cubs career. The southpaw struck out two in the outing. He's now got 21 saves total, owning a 1.87 ERA, 0.83 WHIP and 48/8 K/BB ratio over 33 2/3 innings. An elite closer on an elite team, Chapman could put up some gaudy numbers over the season's final two months.

Cubs acquired LHP Aroldis Chapman from the Yankees in exchange for SS Gleyber Torres, RHP Adam Warren, OF Billy McKinney, and OF Rashad Crawford.

Advice: There had been reports of the Cubs attempting to work out a contract extension with Chapman, but the impending free agent left-hander is apparently intent on hitting the open market this winter. New York also tried an extension with Chapman back in June, but those talks obviously failed. The fire-balling 28-year-old will take over at closer on the north side of Chicago, with Hector Rondon shifting into a setup role. Chapman owns a dominant 2.01 ERA, 0.89 WHIP, and 44/8 K/BB ratio in 31 1/3 innings since returning in May from a domestic violence suspension.

According to USA Today's Bob Nightengale, the Cubs will not have a contract extension in place with Aroldis Chapman when their trade for the closer becomes official.

Advice: They tried hard, as did the Yankees before agreeing to this five-player swap, but Chapman is apparently intent on testing the free agent waters following the 2016 season. He is headed to the Cubs in exchange for shortstop prospect Gleyber Torres, outfield prospect Billy McKinney, right-hander Adam Warren, and minor league outfielder Rashad Crawford. Chapman will take over at closer on the north side of Chicago, with Hector Rondon moving to a setup role.

Jon Heyman of FanRag Sports reports that the Yankees and Cubs have agreed to an Aroldis Chapman trade.

Advice: New York will get shortstop prospect Gleyber Torres, outfield prospect Billy McKinney, right-hander Adam Warren, and one other player. The trade feels like a huge score for the Yankees, but this is the go-for-it of all go-for-its with the Cubs, who haven't won a World Series title since 1908. Chapman will take over at closer in Chicago, with Hector Rondon shifting to a setup role. The flame-throwing 28-year-old left-hander owns a 2.16 ERA and 590 strikeouts in 350 1/3 career major league innings.

According to Joel Sherman of the New York Post, the Yankees will get four players from the Cubs in the yet-to-be-finalized Aroldis Chapman trade.

Advice: Top shortstop prospect Gleyber Torres is the centerpiece, but Sherman hears the Yankees are also getting Adam Warren back from the Cubs -- he was traded to Chicago last winter in the Starlin Castro trade -- as well as two other prospects. Yankees owner Hal Steinbrenner has apparently signed off on the deal, so it's not clear what the hold-up might be. There's been talk of the Cubs possibly trying to work out a pre-trade contract extension with Chapman, who can become a free agent five days after the 2016 World Series.

Jeff Passan of Yahoo Sports reports that a deal that would send Aroldis Chapman to the Cubs isn't completed yet, but looks even likelier.

Advice: The Yankees would receive multiple pieces in return including Gleyber Torres. It sounds as though this deal is going to get done soon, though it may not end up getting finished on Sunday night.

According to Jon Heyman of FanRag Sports, the Cubs and Yankees are working to finalize an Aroldis Chapman trade.

Advice: Cubs shortstop prospect Gleyber Torres is believed to be in the package that would head to New York, along with another piece or two. Chapman, a 28-year-old impending free agent, has registered a stellar 2.01 ERA, 0.89 WHIP, and 44/8 K/BB ratio in 31 1/3 innings since returning in May from a domestic violence suspension. There's a report from Rian Watt of Baseball Prospectus suggesting that the Cubs are trying to work out a contract extension with Chapman on top of the trade. That could be the major hold-up.

Jon Heyman of FanRag Sports reports that Yankees owner Hal Steinbrenner "has not given authorization to sell top guys" yet.

Advice: The Aroldis Chapman rumors have been swirling, but it doesn't appear Steinbrenner is ready to give up on the season just yet with the Yanks having won six of their last eight games to pull within shouting distance of a Wild Card spot. Ultimately, it would be hard to see the Bombers not selling, but perhaps it will depend on how they play this week. The Nationals, Cubs and Indians look like the three favorites to land Chapman.

Bruce Levine of WSCR-AM and 670thescore.com reports that the Indians "have the best names on the table" for Aroldis Chapman.

Advice: Previous reports have had both the Nationals and Cubs out in front in the sweepstakes for Chapman. There's also been a "mystery team" floated. In other words, welcome to the trade deadline. The Indians already have a capable closer in Cody Allen, but adding Chapman would bolster their bullpen for a possible playoff run.

Jon Heyman of FanRag Sports reports that the Nationals "are trailing at least three other teams" in the pursuit of Aroldis Chapman.

Advice: It's a notable change, as they had been viewed as the favorite. It was Heyman who previously reported that the Yankees wanted Joe Ross but the Nats weren't willing to part with him, so perhaps that could be a deal killer between the two teams. Heyman backs up FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal's previous report about the Cubs possibly jumping into the lead for Chapman, as he says they're "pushing hard" for the reliever. The Indians and Giants are in on Chapman, as well, although Alex Pavlovic of CSNBayArea.com hears that the Giants "aren't in the final mix" for the reliever.
