Advice: "He took a few ground balls (Wednesday)," Price said. "It wasn't as good a result as we had hoped. There was still some fairly significant discomfort when he got lateral side-to-side so we had back off with that and stay with some strengthening and whatever the physical therapy protocols are. We hope when we get back there are some marked improvement. He took some light swings yesterday and he'll be able to gradually increase baseball workload based on how he feels." The Reds aren't ready to shut Votto down for the season and don't think his distal quad strain will be a chronic injury. However, with the club's playoff hopes dwindling, the odds of them bringing Votto back in the final month aren't good at this point. Fantasy owners certainly shouldn't be expecting to get him back.

Advice: Votto has also been playing catch and doing some running. He appears to be getting closer to a return, but the minor league seasons ending over the weekend limits his opportunities to get into rehab games. Even when he comes back he won't be 100 percent, Reds manager Bryan Price has continued to say, and it's still unclear when that return may be.

Advice: It's the first dose of baseball-related activities for Votto since he landed on the disabled list July 6 with a strained left quad. The Reds have plummeted out of the postseason picture in his absence and aren't going to rush him back at this point. Votto can probably be dropped in redraft leagues.

Advice: There's been talk of Jocketty perhaps reuniting with Tony La Russa in Arizona, but it doesn't sound like either Jocketty or the Reds is ready for a divorce. Jocketty's lack of inventiveness and eagerness to overcommit to spare parts are both problems at this stage of his long, excellent career, especially given the Reds' annual lack of financial flexibility. Moving on and trying something different would be the right move for Cincinnati.
